Thursday, March 19th, 2009On the Receiving End
Sunday, January 11th, 2009I just read a post on The Wanna Be Poker Star’s blog where he was on the other end of a quad (read it, painful story!), and it reminded me of this hand. It’s already fairly well known, but I just like to add videos…
This blog is now DO-follow
Saturday, January 10th, 2009Cliffnotes for tl;dr’s: I’ve removed the nofollow attribute from links in any comments. This helps the Google ranking of my friends who comment here.
long version;
What do I mean by DO-follow?
This has to do with websites and something called Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). When you search on Google you usually get thousands of results, but often the ones you’re most interested in are on the first page of results. How does Google figure this out?
One way it does this is by looking at ‘inbound links’. For instance it finds a website that is about dogs. Google then sees how many other sites are linking to the dog site – more links means that the site is talked about more, and ranks it higher.
However, that’s open to abuse, and someone can artificially move their site up the rankings by spamming sites like forums and blogs with just links to their site. The blogs, forums and Google fought back by introducing an attribute called ‘nofollow’ which can be added to links. If Google sees it then they won’t use the link in the algorithm to calculate the ranking of the linked site.
Has that discouraged spammers. No not really, but every little helps.
However, it also penalises genuine people commenting on sites like mine. Now since I screen every comment that appears here, the automatic adding of nofollow isn’t needed. So I decided to remove it (using the Nofollow Free plugin), and let my friends benefit from the link…
Squeeze Play
Tuesday, January 6th, 2009I while ago I asked on 2p2 what a squeeze play was. I did kinda know, but Ryan Fee’s guide had more strategy on it than I expected so I wondered if I’d misunderstood or underestimated it.
Turned out I didn’t, and it really is just hammering a bunch of limpers with a big bet in position to take down the pot there and then.
Here’s a great example;
Maybe it’s just me but Harrington looks well nervous there. Not much of a poker face surely?
Merry Christmas
Saturday, December 27th, 2008ok, not played any poker, but figured this was a good chance to change my theme back!
Looking forward to another year of losing small change… (adds up quickly though, doesn’t it!)
iPoker Hand Converter
Saturday, December 20th, 2008I’ve found a hand converter by weaktight.com that works properly for iPoker hands at last (like for the Titan site where I play).
Unfortunately it still needs tweaking a bit, such as it uses links to their graphics and I’d rather have them local, but at least it converts the hand without errors!

Update: I’ve noticed that people are coming to this page from Google after searching for an iPoker hand convertor. The weaktight site works perfectly! The tweaks I mention above are for converting the 2p2 hand to html I can post on my blog. I don’t like the card images from weaktight and would rather they were links to a file locally on my website.
So I created this page; http://www.meteoricpoker.com/convert2p2.php which takes the 2p2 format, and converts text like :heart: to <img src=“/heart.png” alt=“”> (also bold & coloured text etc), so I can paste it easily here.
Feel free to use it as well. You’ll need to have heart, club, diamond and spades PNG file in the root of your website though…
