Inconspicuous Absence

Monday, March 28th, 2011

I’m not dead, I’m just haven’t had time to play the pokerz. I picked up a nice webdevelopment contract that’s taking all my time up, and it’s way more EV & variance free than clicking call all the time.

What little I have played has been unimpressive and lossy, so you’re not missing anything :-)

Should return to the game early next month…

Stuff

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Not much to say really. Last night I had my first session in ages where I won more husngs than I lost, with a nice streak of 5 games won at one point.  Prior to that I’ve not been losing, but I’ve not been beating the rake either – a very round 50% ITM unfortunately. I’m still playing the $10 games, but rolled for $20s and hopefully will move back up soon – sadly no longer rolled for the $30s, and it’s going to be a bit of a climb to get back there.

Cellsino have pissed me off a bit as they’ve not paid any rakeback yet. My account there has jumped up and down a fair bit, and currently sits back at the amount I initially deposited. The Rakeback however would boost that by about 30% so it’s annoying that they’re not paying up. I’ll just have to keep pestering them.

On the finding a new job I’ve still not started as one of my website development clients has a CV writing service (here’s a plug :-) http://www.citycv.co.uk), and she’s sorting out my CV in return for a few hours work on her site. Once I’ve got that back I’ll start firing it off – there seems to be a reasonable number of jobs in Cardiff so should be ok, although obv the economy isn’t making this the best time to jump ship. I still keep wondering whether I’m making a sensible move, especially because Cardiff seems such a random choice. If it’s all about the climbing then going to Sheffield makes more sense, but I’ve lived there and taking backward steps like that never works. Edinburgh was a possibility, but too far north and too expensive. My parents are up in North Wales, but it’d still be a 3 hour drive to get to them since it’s all hills and mountains that way. Living up there would be great for the outdoors, but there isn’t a decent city to live in at all. I learnt from that mistake when I moved from the centre of Sheffield to just outside in the peak district – all of a sudden I was completely stranded in the middle of nowhere & if I wanted to go to the pub in Shef I had to leave early because the buses were so crap. Much better to live in a city and have the countryside for the evenings and weekends if you want it (Sheffield was awesome for that really – great city and to get out into the hills was a quick 20 minute cycle!).

Flexing My Coding Fingers

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Applied for a job in London that appeared randomly in my email the other day (recruitment agents will *never* delete your details once you’ve signed up with them it seems). The job is close to twice my current salary as it’s with a financial consulting company so it was worth a try.

The job involves coding in Flex, which is a language for creating online apps in Flash, and I’ve about 6 months experience in this. That’s not a lot, but then it’s a relatively new language, and the job I did was for a big bluechip financial company so I might have a shot at the job.

Anyway, so figured I’d better remind myself of how it works. Here’s a widget I’ve knocked up that gives you HU preflop ranges (it’s in flash, so maybe you need a browser plugin if you can’t see anything);

Now as a link – it no longer fits on this page!

Notice it is HU ranges, so not quite the same as pokerstove might give (you can tell by pushing the min right up to 99% and see that 72o is stronger than 32o).

Just a beta at the moment, I’ll be adding nash & sage, plus preflop raise sizing as well in a bit. At the moment I’m just showing off though :-)

Update: that’s most of the functionality I think, perhaps needs a bit of prettifying maybe…

Building my Site

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

I guess you’ve probably noticed the menu bar that’s appeared on my blog pages, plus http://www.meteoricpoker.com/ doesn’t just redirect to the blog any more.

It’s an attempt to make the affiliate side of my site a bit more attractive. I feel kinda awkward about it though I’m clearly not a fantastic poker player and here I am offering advice on how to beat the micros! (I guess I can claim to have beaten NL2 & NL5 now, um, kindof).

The ‘advice’ is the usual stuff you can pick up from books & forums, although I’m trying to explain it as clearly as I can rather than just plain plagiarising. It’s still a work in progress – apart from the obvious dry layout and formatting what I’d really like to do is back up some of the explanations with good hand history examples etc. It’s also just NLHE, since that’s all I play :-)

Anyway, hopefully this isn’t putting off anyone who comes here just to read my blog posts. Also constructive criticism & feedback would be really cool – have a browse and tell me if I’ve been an idiot anywhere…

My Poker IQ

The ol’ poker IQ test at donkeytest.com;

Back in Dec 2007 my poker IQ was 97 (I can’t believe I was even playing poker back then!?)
Dec 2008 it rose to 105

Today it’s 103. It’s official, I’m getting stupider…
