I’d Already Got My Rakeback – BR Stands Still :-(

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Disaster – I noticed an email that said I had already received the $30 rakeback. I checked my PokerTracker and it seems I’ve lost $36 in the last week, and so the Rakeback payment had gone in covering this loss! My bankroll stands still :-(

Do I play highly swingy poker? It seems to be a 1k session where I win 4 buy-ins, and then 4 sessions where I lose a buy-in in each. Is that normal? Looking at other graphs they seem less extreme than this, but I’m probably misreading things. Would knowing my standard deviation help?

Equally, if I do play swingy poker, then how do I feel about that? For comparison, if by magic I played 6bb/100 perfectly consistently, then a 1k hands session would win 60bb. Less than a buy in. How unexciting would that be – a true grind! Maybe I should embrace my swinginess….

Playing Well, But Not Building Bankroll

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Another low blog post week has gone by – I have been playing, but it’s been remarkably unexciting. The last three sessions have been particularly disappointing as I played well 99% of the time only to mess a couple of hands up in each making each come  out -ve.

The last session’s big bad hand probably wasn’t played badly if you go by pot odds though;

$0.02/$0.05 No Limit Holdem
5 Players
Stacks:
Hero (UTG) ($9.46)
CO ($5.20)
BTN ($11.32)
SB ($2.19)
BB ($2)

Pre-Flop: ($0.07, 5 players) Hero is UTG 7clubs poker card 8clubs poker card
Hero raises to $0.14, 1 fold, BTN calls $0.14, SB calls $0.12, 1 fold

Flop: 10diamonds poker card Jclubs poker card Kclubs poker card ($0.47, 3 players)
SB goes all-in $2.05, Hero calls $2.05, BTN goes all-in $11.18, Hero goes all-in $7.27

Turn: 2spades poker card ($23.02, 3 players, 3 all-in)

River: 6hearts poker card ($23.02, 3 players, 3 all-in)

Final Pot: $23.02
Hero shows
7clubs poker card 8clubs poker card
BTN shows
Jhearts poker card Kdiamonds poker card
SB shows
4hearts poker card Qhearts poker card

BTN wins $21.61 ( won +$10.29 )

Hero lost -$9.46
SB lost -$2.19

However, it was a big pot to gambool on. All the worse since the gamble didn’t pay off. It was clear that I had to hit that flush to win, since it was unlikely both the other players were on a draw (and even if they were it’s really unlikely I’d have had the highest card!). Even hitting the flush was probably not a guaranteed win either (even though it turned out neither were on a flush draw). So, lost 2 buy-ins at a stroke there :-(

There have been a couple of changes in my game lately, although more experimental than definite leak fixing. The first is donk betting. More often than not if in the situation where I could donk bet I do. Either I’ve missed the flop and the preflop raiser checked, in which case I bet as a bluff, or I’ve hit the flop and I bet for value. The betting as a bluff is working out I believe – at NL5 most checks from the villain is because they’ve missed the flop (I’m not expecting this to be the case >NL10 though – too many people understand the cbet). The donk betting for value though is starting to be uncertain – it seems common opinion is it’s better to check and wait for the turn, after all only better hands would call. On the other hand, a large percentage of players will call a flop bet (dismissing it as a cbet with air) and reevaluate on the turn. I’m still unsure what my line is with donk betting really – I wish it wasn’t called donk betting though, it seems overly disparaging for what could be a reasonable line (at what times though?).

Second change is more shoves with AK – if I open with AK and get 3bet I’ll shove, whereas before I’d call and wait to hit the flop before continuing. I checked PokerTracker and found that the fold equity in the shove outweighed the losses in the flip in coming up against a pair (ie let’s assume AK vs PP cancel out, leaving plenty of profit from AK vs AQ, AJ etc and 3betters who fold). However, last three sessions my flips have all gone the wrong way, so suffering a bit from variance there (btw, calling a shove with AK is a different kettle of fish, and generally I won’t unless I’ve 3bet leaving a small relative stack behind – too many shoves are KK+ and it doesn’t seem to be worth it).

So. Bankroll is at $220, with about $30 to come in rakeback. I’m annoyed that I haven’t got to $250 from the cards themselves, but $250 is $250, and I’ll be going to NL10 as soon as that Rakeback arrives. Actually I’m also annoyed that $50 of that $220 was the Take 2 bonus, so it’s really not like I’ve played my way here :-( although filtering on my NL5 results does show a $180 win so far, and it’s only the NL10 that’s destroyed my earnings so far. Mixed feelings, but certainly not feeling that I’m beating the nanostakes game really.

Cake’s Doyles Room Added to Rakeback and Bonus Offers

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Doyle’s Room has been added to the list of offers. I’m afraid you can’t get rakeback if you already have a Cake network account though…

My PokerTracker All In Performance Can’t be Working

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

So far this month my NL5 game has done ok – up $67;

24Sep09_NL5

Except I haven’t made $67 since my attempts at NL10 went wrong and I’m actually only $0.40 up :-( I guess it’s still +ve.

However it’s gets a bit shocking when you look at my all-in performance for NL5;

24Sep09_NL5-allinperformance

Clearly my PokerTracker is just plain broken. No other reason for it.

Other news – tomorrow I complete the Full Tilt Take 2 promotion, so that’s a free $50, plus rakeback is currently $25. Fantastic – if only I’d had Rakeback a year ago, it would made so much difference…

Welcome Back to NL10, Here’s a Complimentary Kick in the Nuts

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

redarrowsRed Arrows are buzzing Cambridge at the moment – so awesome!

Warning - this post is a whinging bad beat story like on everyone else’s blog.

After faithfully sticking to NL5 I’ve made a reasonable gain on the BR – including the $50 Take 2 bonus I should get at the end of the month, and the rakeback looking like it’ll be 30something dollars it all looks very rosy and I decided to return to NL10 (again).

I was determined not to play scared money – stick to the usual gameplan and not worry if it all goes tits-up too much.

Of course it went tits up.

Here’s a graph of my last two weeks – nice grind, followed by today’s session;
20Sept09

The first few losses were unfortunate but ok – I had 82s (checked in the BB) which went to make a flush, but the board then went four to the flush and an 8 wasn’t enough (I still called on the river – another situation where I know I’m beat but can’t lay it down. I timed right down thinking ‘I’m beat, fold’ before clicking call at the last second), then with QQ on the button I was reraised by the BB – I shoved to be faced with AA.

So they weren’t so horrible, but all the rest were;

This hand takes some explanation – the BTN was truly terrible player. Not merely 66/8, but someone who would go to showdown happily with bottom pair. He’d also taken a beating four hands earlier shoving with a JJ to meet KK, fortunately reloading (short) and then proceeded to shove on every hand. When he minraised I realised I had an opportunity to get him all-in, hoping that the SB would drop out. He didn’t but when I saw their cards I was relieved that he didn’t have a high pair. Typically though he hits it on the river…

Finally, one more villain hits on the river;

Stacks:

CO ($21.14)
BTN ($1.24)

Flop: 3diamonds poker card Kspades poker card 9diamonds poker card ($0.90, 3 players)
SB bets $0.60, Hero calls $0.60, CO folds

Turn: Jclubs poker card ($2.10, 2 players)

Final Pot: $20.30
SB shows
Adiamonds poker card Qdiamonds poker card

SB wins $18.95 ( won +$8.95 )

CO lost -$0.30
Hero lost -$10

So after all that I’m a bit deflated. It was a bad run, and I should have finished ahead really. Three buy-ins isn’t huge, but it’s a lot for my first shot back at NL10. I’m going to have to return to NL5 and once I’ve won back $30 I’ll try again. Very tedious…

Happy Birthday to Me

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Well, almost – it’s my birthday in a couple of days, but figured I’d blog now while sober (ish). Unfortunately it’s the big four-oh, so not so great really. My mid-life crisis plan is all ready to go, all I’ve left to sort out is the base jumping course…

My brother has noticed my obsession with poker, and as a b’day pressie has signed me up to a live MTT (£20+£3, no idea what the structure is). There’s no casinos remotely close to Cambridge (I think?), but this is some group that hires out a hall and is cashing in on the poker boom – I’ve known about it for a little while but was a bit chicken about trying out live poker with real people (I’ve played drunk games with mates, but there’s never more than a few quid at stake). Also £20 isn’t pocket money for me either (yet – all I have to do is drag myself out of NL5!). Now the pressure’s on not to do my usual tourney strategy (bet, bet, go home).

The tourney was to be Thursday, but out of the blue my parents and my sister all decided they were coming over to Cambridge to help me ‘celebrate’ my entry into over the hillness. So that’s got a raincheck until next week.

This poker place also has rake free SNGs & cash games going on as well which is pretty cool, although the cash games start at £0.50/£1 which is too steep for me (especially as this isn’t going to be full of drunk tourists like Vegas, but rather people who are into poker – probably a good recipe to lose a load of money). Some of the SNG’s start at £5, so that might be ok. I’ve no idea how they’re organising this – is it legal to set up a casino in a town hall?

Update: uh, a hand to show a) why you don’t play after lots of wine, and b) why microstakes is so stupid;

$0.02/$0.05 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
Hero (UTG) ($5.52)
UTG+1 ($1.16)
CO ($5.09)
BTN ($5.95)
SB ($5.00)
BB ($5.52)

Pre-flop: ($0.07, 6 players) Hero is UTG Q A
Hero raises to $0.15, UTG+1 raises to $0.25, CO calls $0.25, 3 folds, Hero calls $0.10 because it’s only 10c

Flop: 4 7 Q ($0.82, 3 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 bets $0.05, CO raises to $0.97, Hero figures the CO is FOS and calls $0.97 intending to raise the turn and hoping the MP doesn’t follow, forgetting to check his stack size, UTG+1 goes all-in $0.86

Turn: 4 ($3.67, 3 players)
Hero forgets about his turn play and checks, CO bets $3.67, Hero drunkenly goes all-in $4.30 but doesn’t give the CO too much credit (and surprisingly was actually right!), CO goes all-in $0.20

River: 7 ($11.84, 3 players)

Final Pot: $11.41
Hero shows: Q A
UTG+1 shows: A Q
CO shows: 8 7
Hero says “wtf?”

Hero wins $0.43 ( lost -$5.09 )
CO wins $10.65 ( won +$5.56 )
UTG+1 lost -$1.16

Update II: Just been playing around on the pokertableratings.com website – there’s some amazing stats on there. I come out fairly reasonable which is a bit surprising. One nice little piece (although not that useful) is you get a report card! Here’s mine;

reportcard

and even better for NL10! (not many hands tho – this is just for Full Tilt so doesn’t include the bashings I’ve taken at Pokerstars);

Not Much Happening

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Oops, not posted for a whole week!

Not much has happened to be honest though. I’ve been play a bit each day for the Full Tilt Take 2 promotion, all at NL5. I’ve decided to definitely build a ‘proper’ BR before moving back to NL10 – with my newly gained rakeback and the Take 2 monies it doesn’t look like it’s going to take that long.

This weekend has been so-so;

13Sept09

It’s felt pretty good though – no big blunders or drastic hero calls that shouldn’t have happened. However flop continuation bets seemed to have got an odd result – I boosted my cbet % to 60%, and it seemed to be working, or at least a lot of people were folding to those bets. Filtering the results in PokerTracker shows a $6 loss though. It seems to be from just 3 hands that went bad, so possibly I shouldn’t see it as a sign that my cbetting is flawed somehow (um, maybe).

ps. New blog added to the blogroll; Burnley poker
