December Results

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

A bit early to December results, but with xmas/new year etc I might as well do it now. Hopefully I can do a 2009 roundup post soon as well.

So this month started out well, but then died at the end;

And by site;
Site(hands): $$$ (rb = rakeback)
————————
FT(1216): $62.07+$8.08(rb)
PS(1050): -$12.95
UB(1172): -$22.97+$2.69(rb)
PP(882): -$27.94

I don’t really know what to make of things – there were plenty of bad beats I guess, but it’s hard to tell if that’s the real reason I lost 6 buy-ins in less than 300 hands. It devastated the money I put into PS, UB and PP – now I really need to reload them, although such a crushing has put me off playing there now. If it had happened at Full Tilt at least I would have had Rakeback to console me.

ok, here are all the worst losing hands in the 6 buy-in crash. Any advice welcome…

Variance – A Kick In The Nuts!

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Ugh – just had the most miserable session at Party Poker. The last session I had a fantastic win of almost $30, this one destroyed that with a crushing -$25 :-(

No AA’s (only 70 hands, so odds against this anyway)
14 PP’s, only hitting 1 set but board went 4 to a flush (and I didn’t have a flush card).
KK twice – table folded winning a total of $0.25
JJ 3x – twice table folded, other time two-tone flop, I bet flop and turn, the calling station hits his flush on river.
The only flush I get is beat by a full house when turn and river pair (and I didn’t slowplay!).

So that was the shitty variance side of things. Where did I make it worse?

The calling station who hit his flush – I called his river pot sized bet.
I tried a multistreet bluff on a board that had double paired (ie it was 2QQ92) – villain had called my flop bet and when the 2 landed I thought I was in good shape to represent a full house (ie having a Q or 2). Villain couldn’t fold his aces though.
Tried a semibluff on a turn card – villain had two pair and obv called, I didn’t hit my flush.

Some days are just not meant to be winning days…

It’s the Weekend Again (at last)

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Going to be a bit of a crappy day today as I have to get the xmas shopping done (exchange of presents always seems very -ev! I think hard about what to get, spends a pile and in return get socks).

However, it started out nice;

$0.05/$0.10 No Limit Holdem
4 Players

Stacks:
CO ($10)
BTN ($5.39)
SB ($19.18)
Hero ($10.32)

Pre-Flop: ($0.15, 4 players) Hero is BB 10hearts poker card 10clubs poker card
CO checks, 1 fold, SB raises to $0.30, Hero calls $0.20, CO calls $0.20

Flop: 6clubs poker card 6spades poker card 3clubs poker card ($0.80, 3 players)
SB bets $0.50, Hero calls $0.50, CO calls $0.50

Turn: 10diamonds poker card ($2.30, 3 players)
SB bets $1.10, Hero calls $1.10, CO raises to $3.60, SB raises to $10.30, Hero goes all-in $8.42, CO goes all-in $5.60

River: 3diamonds poker card ($31.32, 3 players, 2 all-in)

Final Pot: $31.32
Hero shows a full house, Tens full of Sixes
10hearts poker card 10clubs poker card
CO shows a full house, Sixes full of Threes
8hearts poker card 6hearts poker card
SB shows two pair, Kings and Sixes
Kdiamonds poker card Kclubs poker card

Hero wins $29.64 (net +$19.32)

SB collects $0.78 (net -$10.32)
CO lost $9.90

The guy with the tens perhaps shouldn’t have floated, but then he’s a genius postflop and knew a ten was going to land (lol!). I thought about raising the turn, but really couldn’t see why – I had the nuts, and the other guys seemed happy to be in the hand.

So, +$25 this morning on Full Tilt. Now moving on to Pokerstars. Will keep you all up to date…

Update: PokerStars went down, then up, then horrendously down, instantly followed by up and up. Finally I had to get off at +$6…

Yegor then popped up on skype and said we should crush the miniftops #9 since it’s HU and we’re HU gods (allegedly) – we entered a couple of satellites, but bust out of them (gods, or dogs?). I got to the final table of one of them (64 entrants in the tourney), but completely messed up when I misclicked into calling a shove. Before everyone starts nodding and saying ‘oh yeah sure’ etc, I will admit it I was over hovering the call button (I had TJo) which would have been a lame call – I then thought, nah, obv fold and as I moved the mouse away it clicked the call button – serves me right for using the laptop’s mousepad and not a proper mouse…

Then did some xmas shopping. Now considering my options – more HU attempts at miniftops, more nlhe, or some plo? Possibly more coffee and Cake first though…

Update II: ok, so I went with a few more goes at getting into the miniftops #9 and failed. I still got fairly deep (usually last 4 out of 64), but just couldn’t go the last mile somehow. Not too bothered because it cost virtually nothing (matches were either $1 or Full Tilt Points) and I got loads of practice at HU. I surprised myself at how well I played, although obviously failing the end goal meant I still have much to learn…

I then switched to Party Poker and ran up $22.73 in 121 hands, which was somewhat startling. I find it hard playing there – the level of play is all over the place and one minute you’re playing nits and then suddenly everybody is totally manic. Plus the interface is very crowded – buttons etc are ok, but it’s just all too colourful and I’ve failed to notice someone else in the hand a few times now (ie I raised a SB limper only to realise the button hadn’t folded!).

So, end result is one of the best Saturdays I ever done – over 5 buy-ins, plus managed to mess around with stuff like HU;

12Dec09

And got my xmas shopping done. Perhaps in a few minutes I’ll wake up… (actually if this is a dream then that’s really really sad – must get a life and dream at least about something sexier!).

Also, courtesy of Party Poker, here’s why you shouldn’t a) limp, b) slowplay a set!

The Insanity that is Ultimate Bet

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Wow, I’d forgotten just how stupid Ultimate Bet is.

I took out $150 and spread it across Ultimate Bet, Party Poker and Pokerstars. I’m not that used to the interfaces on UB or Party so figured I’d not multisite them simultaneously, and just play UB today. I was quite pleased to find a reload bonus on Ultimate Bet, so that’ll boost the earnings there a bit.

You know when you read the beginner’s forums on 2p2 etc, and there’s usually someone whinging about how it’s impossible to microstakes because everyone calls no matter how much you raise preflop, and they always try to see every street and their 84o always manages to make a straight crushing your aces?

Well that’s the embodiment of NL10 Ultimate Bet. Unfortunately it took me a little while to adjust;

02Dec09

I’d raise on the button with my usual ATC and if the blinds didn’t call then the limper(s) in the pot certainly would (usually all of them would). Even if I’d managed to isolate one of them, a cbet on a decent flop would also get called. I realised I was spewing money with what would normally be reasonable play.

So I tightened up my range, mainly in late position (which is normally fairly wide, but there’s not much point messing around when the play’s so loose – blinds, UTG and MP position stayed roughly the same). With pocket pairs I tried to see flops a bit cheaper than the usual 3bb. The plan is to just value bet – fit or fold good starting hands and then make them pay when they hit.

I made a few hands and recovered most of my losses, then hit a dry spell (plus a few decent players appeared). You can see from the graph exactly what happened when! The dry spell is annoying – playing this kind of style you have a hugely negative redline, and it’s a steady drain of money.

So, results not so hot so far – this is becoming a test to see which site loses me the least rather than wins me the most. Early days though.

Updated (party poker to the rescue!):

FT (136 hands):     $1.33 + $0.60(rakeback)
PS (153 hands):    -$12.35
UB (330 hands):  -$8.77  + $1.42(Rakeback)
PP (304 hands):     $15.05

total: -$6.72
