Bust to Boom

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

I got back onto the pokerz to regrind that loss at NL10. I’m frustrated but not that bothered – I’ve decided that I’m coming to terms with variance and beginning to not care that some sessions go well while others go south. I was watching 2 million in 2 months, and one of the guys said how it was really bad when you lost in poker, while winning was just a relief. I kind of feel what he’s saying, but at the same time today I had the mother of all heaters, and it felt GREAT!

Nothing could go wrong. I even had a royal flush, which admittedly I didn’t play too well as it was an automatic reflex to squeeze the CO out and I probably could have let him see a few more cards;

I also layed down a full house which at the time seemed like a smart move, but looking back at it I don’t think he had a ten. At the most it was a 4 too;

UTG+1 lost -$0.05

So, end of the morning;

22Sep09

Nice! You’d think that’d put me almost back into NL10, but unfortunately I lost $12 last night, so still ~$20 short. The session last night was bewildering – I’d played about 300 hands, entering the pot on about 60 of them. Of those I was 3bet 20 times! It was a constant barrage of 3betting – every table was manic. I folded all but a couple and those two lost me $0.60 and $5, so it was pretty horrible.

Pokerunderdog said a wise thing and that it was just a coincidental run. He’s definitely right I think, and I should have just switched tables in order to start afresh rather than ditching the whole thing in for the night. So much mindset involved in poker!

Struggling Again

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

I’m running bad again, or maybe I should say playing bad again. I dunno, it’s not totally clear what I’m doing wrong – I’ve caught myself slipping back into one of my old leaks – PP preflop misses the flop, I’ll call a flop bet (he’s doing a standard cbet bluff right), & then calling a turn bet just in case the set comes through. Way too calling station :-( So knocking that on the head.

However, I’m still losing money far too quickly. I switched to Ultimate Bet just to try out my rakeback stuff, and I’m down $30 after 3 days. I initially messed up $20 while trying to sort out my PokerTracker HUD (what a struggle! got it in the end) and then pulled $10 back at NL2 – UB doesn’t have NL5 tables, so it’s NL2 or NL10 for me there.

Also the NL10 tables are 200bb max buy-in, and while a lot of players still buy-in at $5 I played a couple of tables full stacked – I discovered I wasn’t comfortable playing deep! :-) I think buying in at $20 just makes it scared money for me.

However, I then got KK – raised, was 3bet, I 4bet, he 5bet (still not all in!), so I shoved and he showed QQ – both hands remain unimproved and I win a pot of $36! Once we got to the 5bet I was a bit uncertain – doesn’t that mean AA/KK? I guess it means QQ too – if roles were reversed I’m not sure what I’d have done, maybe just called the 4bet. It did make me feel unhappy about playing deep, so I’m only going to buy in at 100bb now.

So why am I down $30 after climbing back to -$10 and then winning a double buy-in? I don’t know – I just can’t get to grips with the game there. Also I’m not hitting many cards. The cards should be no different of course, but once you start losing it’s easy to lay the blame there.

(I was going to post a hand here, but the 2p2 hand converter refuses to convert UB hands – you just get a message about the UB scandal!).

ok – got it converted by weaktight – here’s my bad beat of the day (actually it’s a bit of hero call, but let’s just say I had a read on the villain, *cough*);

ps. First $5 bonus achieved on the Full Tilt Take 2 Bonus – so easy! I can’t believe I’m going to get $50 just by playing 5 minutes of NL5 every day :-D

Update: ok, as you may have seen from my twitter I decided to do some Full Tilt Academy challenges to cheer myself up, and so I 6 tabled some NL5.

Of course, like most of my NL5 sessions lately, it went like this;

05Sep09_nl5

Which cheered me up :-)

How come I can beat NL5 very comfortably, but NL10 is still all over the place? The Academy challenge I was on was ’5 Common Hold’em Leaks’ which gave 5 tasks like raise TT+, AK  (& do this 5 times) etc – all very standard NLHE moves. In the session above I passed all but one, and that one was conspicuous by how much I failed to achieve it;

0 times out of 5: Open fold pre-flop 5 times with a suited A-X, where the “X” is 9 or lower.

Ahhh, I love sooooted cards too much :-)   TBH I do like opening A2s to A5s a fair bit. Maybe I should try and learn from the challenge and cut back (maybe, so hard to teach an old dog new tricks!)

Update II: ah, after another long session it’s become obvious that the opportunities to open fold a suited ace just don’t come along that often. In fact, they never come along! Soooo, not much of a leak if playing sooted aces is so bad…

Time to Move Back

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Had another nice session at NL5;

30Aug09

So since I decided to move down to NL5 to regroup (only a week ago) I’ve made $88 (3k hands, 23BB/100). I could be 100% disciplined and make it $100, but I can’t be arsed. Not a huge sample, but there’s no reason to stay here and I might as well go back to NL10.

I shouldn’t expect to maintain that once back there though – not that I need to change my strategy, it’s just that I’ve been amazed how badly people play at NL5. It had always been a bit of a cursed stakes for me, but I guess back then I was just playing like everyone else :-)

Update: Ugh – played a few tables at NL10 and what happened – got beat up again. Only saving grace was the last hand was an AK all-in which made a hand. Ended up losing $13, so still up overall today. Something about NL10 makes me play like a maniac for some reason.

NL10 Winnings at NL5 Prices

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Continuing my NL5 sessions to regroup before returning to NL10.  Probably won’t be here much longer – thanks to the postdated rakeback I got my FT account is sitting at over $100 (with sadly only about $30 in PS). However I’d like to cash out $50 from the FT account once this ‘biggest ever’ bonus is over so that my RL BR is paid back.

Today was a great session though – got hit in the nuts for 2 buy-ins very early on, but I stuck with it to come back 6 buy-ins up!

27Aug09

I folded AA & KK in a couple of hands which took a lot of effort – let me know if I was an idiot or not;

I’ve changed my play slightly after watching Yegor play – previously I played a lot of flop cbets as 1/2 to 3/4 pot, but Yegor seems to enjoy using his pot bet button quite liberally. So I’ve changed my cbetting to pot when it’s a draw heavy flop where later cards are probably still required (ie two tone flops or flops with a pair) – that’s regardless of whether I’ve hit the flop or not. On dry flops that I’ve hit I’m still cbetting 1/2 pot to get them into the pot – nobody at these stakes remembers my previous bet sizes, so I’m not too bothered that it’s a bit obvious what I’m doing. Anyway, the pot cbet is working a treat – too many people were calling 3/4 pot cbets before. That being said my flop cbet is only 50%, and I reckon I could increase it a bit more and still be doing well by it.

Drunken Heads Up

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Spent the morning playing 6max 5NL – I’ve taken enough beatings at NL10 now to make me back off a bit and regain my confidence again (not to mention my BR). I know that I’m still making plenty of mistakes and need to sort those out. More often than not it’s a hand where I’ve painted myself into a corner with a bluff or marginal hand, and what I really need to do is make decisions easier for myself, not harder!

Anyway, today went well;

23Aug09I had a big rush of KK’s & QQ’s which gave a nice showdown rise early on – one hand was even all-in against AA and I hit a K (evened out later on, had KK, flop went 484 – villain had played 43s…). Strong non-showdown winnings, although I wasn’t playing deliberately that way – many of my hands had really good showdown value but the villains just didn’t have the stomach for it unfortunately.

Last night played some HU with S1ndr0me and Yegor – we were trying out the private table stuff which was pretty good apart from having to wait an hour for each table created. HU seems a lot of fun – all thrust and parry stuff, but I’ve no idea what I’m supposed to be doing – it all seems very random with psychology playing a bigger role than the cards even. From what I’ve read HU is one of the ways you can still excel at poker while not being overwhelmed by everyone and their dog who’s read 2p2 and all the training sites – possible even to still make good money in other words (for instance – read this; $1M in 300k hands!).

S1ndr0me and I played two games and won one each – we then got Yegor involved to see if he could kick our butts (he could), but by then I was onto my second bottle of wine. Somehow I took the decider off S1ndr0me, although I’m not going to claim any skill there – I think I just hit some good hands at some point (I think?).

I also played a few HU SNG’s during the day, and won a couple, lost a couple. I’m nowhere near rolled enough to play the HU cash games (NL50), but the SNG’s are only a couple of dollars. I’m wondering which is better – a SNG is played for stacks and the rake is all up front, but you can walk away from a cash game when you realise your out of your depth.

Sorry

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Sorry guys, but I promise I won’t play like this again (shouldn’t have been at 5NL in the first place!);

04jun09

I totally hate 5NL – why’s it so hard? 2NL is like a walk in the park with nothing making sense but at least most people are passive, 10NL makes sense with most people making understandable plays, but 5NL? 3bets, 4bets, shoves at weird moments, calling stations everywhere. I think I was beat a dozen times by villains hitting their pair on the river!

So, down to 2NL to conserve your funds – I’ve got to make this last another 17 days :-)

Back to Cash Games for a Bit

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

I’ve had a bit of time in the evenings to play some poker, and figured cash games was probably best. I decided to drop down to 5NL since I’d taken a bit of a beating at 10NL last time (ah, I didn’t blog about that :oops: ), and my BR had dropped back down to $50.

5NL didn’t go too well. Part of the problem was that the games are deep, and max buy-in was $10 – I might as well be playing 10NL! Of course I ended up in a hand over my head and actually busted a whole buy-in;

  • Way too deep
    $0.02/$0.05 No Limit Holdem
    5 players

    Stacks:
    UTG ($1.95)
    CO ($10.27)
    BTN ($11.97)
    SB ($14.71)
    Hero (BB) ($13.37)

    Pre-flop: ($0.07, 5 players) Hero is BB 8 Q
    UTG calls $0.05, 2 folds, SB calls $0.03, Hero checks

    Flop: T 3 Q ($0.15, 3 players)
    SB bets $0.15, Hero raises to $0.45, UTG folds, SB raises to $2, Hero calls $1.55

    Turn: T ($4.15, 2 players)
    SB bets $3.25, Hero calls $3.25

    River: 5 ($10.65, 2 players)
    SB goes all-in $9.41, Hero goes all-in $8.07

    Final Pot: $26.79
    Hero shows: 8 Q
    SB shows: 8 T

    SB wins $26.83 ( won +$12.12 )
    Hero lost -$13.37
    UTG lost -$0.05

I thought I was looking at someone who was betting on hitting a flush, but really he was in a win-win situation. Two pair on the flop *and* a flush draw – how else was he going to play the hand :-(

So my 5NL game came out like;

07apr09-5nl

The real shock came when I tried to open a fourth table and was told I didn’t have enough for the buy-in! My bankroll had dropped to just under $40, and then it really hit home that I was playing deep and might as well been in 10NL.

So I swapped to 2NL, and crushed a few people to recover half of the loss;

07apr09-2nl

That was last night. Tonight I carried on four tabling 2NL, and got a quick hit early on but then struggled to make headway. I’ve decided to change my game slightly by being a bit more nitty. My showdown/non-showdown chart is still redline +ve and blue line -ve, which is a definite sign that while my aggression is successful, I’m letting too many bluffs go to showdown (I definitely have a calling station problem too).
Anyway, here’s tonights all-in performance chart, and again it looks like I’ve been lucky;

08apr09

Yet really that hand wasn’t that bad. The all-in calculation kicked in because someone pushed the dregs of their stack preflop, and then the hand went on to a big pot.

  • -Ev according to PokerTracker
    $0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem
    6 players

    Stacks:
    UTG ($2.35)
    Hero (UTG+1) ($3.88)
    CO ($0.12)
    BTN ($4.32)
    SB ($2.09)
    BB ($1.72)

    Pre-flop: ($0.03, 6 players) Hero is UTG+1 K 9
    UTG calls $0.02, Hero raises to $0.06, CO goes all-in $0.12, BTN calls $0.12, 1 fold, BB calls $0.10, UTG calls $0.10, Hero calls $0.06

    Flop: 8 6 9 ($0.61, 5 players)
    BB checks, UTG bets $0.26, Hero calls $0.26, 1 fold, BB folds

    Turn: 3 ($1.13, 3 players)
    UTG checks, Hero bets $1, UTG calls $1

    River: Q ($3.13, 3 players)
    UTG checks, Hero bets $1, UTG folds

    Final Pot: $3.13
    Hero shows: K 9
    CO shows: J J

    Hero wins $3.37 ( won +$0.99 )
    CO wins $0.61 ( won +$0.49 )
    BTN lost -$0.12
    BB lost -$0.12
    UTG lost -$1.38

Ultimately I won all but $0.12 of that hand due to an awesome bluff (kind of awesome, I figured he was either a failed draw or the scare of the hearts flush would be enough to make him fold). So it looks like I won an extra $1.80 through luck, but I don’t think that was really the case (unless you think I was really lucky that the UTG folded of course). Btw, if you think that river bet size is odd, it’s just that it covered the UTG’s stack – he only had just under a dollar left…
