Struggling

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Haven’t blogged anything in more than a week! That has to be a sign it’s not going well. Last weekend I took a bashing at 2NL losing $7! I then switched to some $1 DoN’s to build that back but lost half/won half, so gaining nothing (other than losing the rake).

This weekend has been identical! Lost $7 at 2NL – how is that possible? Reviewing the hands shows why really;

Half bad, half ok I guess.

I found this guy on youtube. He’s just like me! :-)

Back to Cash Games for a Bit

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

I’ve had a bit of time in the evenings to play some poker, and figured cash games was probably best. I decided to drop down to 5NL since I’d taken a bit of a beating at 10NL last time (ah, I didn’t blog about that :oops: ), and my BR had dropped back down to $50.

5NL didn’t go too well. Part of the problem was that the games are deep, and max buy-in was $10 – I might as well be playing 10NL! Of course I ended up in a hand over my head and actually busted a whole buy-in;

  • Way too deep
    $0.02/$0.05 No Limit Holdem
    5 players

    Stacks:
    UTG ($1.95)
    CO ($10.27)
    BTN ($11.97)
    SB ($14.71)
    Hero (BB) ($13.37)

    Pre-flop: ($0.07, 5 players) Hero is BB 8 Q
    UTG calls $0.05, 2 folds, SB calls $0.03, Hero checks

    Flop: T 3 Q ($0.15, 3 players)
    SB bets $0.15, Hero raises to $0.45, UTG folds, SB raises to $2, Hero calls $1.55

    Turn: T ($4.15, 2 players)
    SB bets $3.25, Hero calls $3.25

    River: 5 ($10.65, 2 players)
    SB goes all-in $9.41, Hero goes all-in $8.07

    Final Pot: $26.79
    Hero shows: 8 Q
    SB shows: 8 T

    SB wins $26.83 ( won +$12.12 )
    Hero lost -$13.37
    UTG lost -$0.05

I thought I was looking at someone who was betting on hitting a flush, but really he was in a win-win situation. Two pair on the flop *and* a flush draw – how else was he going to play the hand :-(

So my 5NL game came out like;

07apr09-5nl

The real shock came when I tried to open a fourth table and was told I didn’t have enough for the buy-in! My bankroll had dropped to just under $40, and then it really hit home that I was playing deep and might as well been in 10NL.

So I swapped to 2NL, and crushed a few people to recover half of the loss;

07apr09-2nl

That was last night. Tonight I carried on four tabling 2NL, and got a quick hit early on but then struggled to make headway. I’ve decided to change my game slightly by being a bit more nitty. My showdown/non-showdown chart is still redline +ve and blue line -ve, which is a definite sign that while my aggression is successful, I’m letting too many bluffs go to showdown (I definitely have a calling station problem too).
Anyway, here’s tonights all-in performance chart, and again it looks like I’ve been lucky;

08apr09

Yet really that hand wasn’t that bad. The all-in calculation kicked in because someone pushed the dregs of their stack preflop, and then the hand went on to a big pot.

  • -Ev according to PokerTracker
    $0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem
    6 players

    Stacks:
    UTG ($2.35)
    Hero (UTG+1) ($3.88)
    CO ($0.12)
    BTN ($4.32)
    SB ($2.09)
    BB ($1.72)

    Pre-flop: ($0.03, 6 players) Hero is UTG+1 K 9
    UTG calls $0.02, Hero raises to $0.06, CO goes all-in $0.12, BTN calls $0.12, 1 fold, BB calls $0.10, UTG calls $0.10, Hero calls $0.06

    Flop: 8 6 9 ($0.61, 5 players)
    BB checks, UTG bets $0.26, Hero calls $0.26, 1 fold, BB folds

    Turn: 3 ($1.13, 3 players)
    UTG checks, Hero bets $1, UTG calls $1

    River: Q ($3.13, 3 players)
    UTG checks, Hero bets $1, UTG folds

    Final Pot: $3.13
    Hero shows: K 9
    CO shows: J J

    Hero wins $3.37 ( won +$0.99 )
    CO wins $0.61 ( won +$0.49 )
    BTN lost -$0.12
    BB lost -$0.12
    UTG lost -$1.38

Ultimately I won all but $0.12 of that hand due to an awesome bluff (kind of awesome, I figured he was either a failed draw or the scare of the hearts flush would be enough to make him fold). So it looks like I won an extra $1.80 through luck, but I don’t think that was really the case (unless you think I was really lucky that the UTG folded of course). Btw, if you think that river bet size is odd, it’s just that it covered the UTG’s stack – he only had just under a dollar left…

Lucky Day

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

I started today as an MTT day, but it didn’t go very well. Seven tournaments without any of them getting to the money. It wasn’t even much fun either, as luck didn’t even go my way either. Perhaps out of those seven I was chip leader once, and it didn’t last.

So I switched to 2NL cash games just to have some fun. It wasn’t about winning rather than just playing without having to stake too much. As it turned out, I managed to cover all my losses on the tourneys;

05apr09

So clearly I’m a microstakes god who puts fear into any table he plays on! Well, not quite – here’s the table with the all-in expectations included;

05apr09ev

I was just lucky! I was four tabling, and some of my decisions were a bit rushed, and I do remember twice hitting a J on the river saving my bacon, but this is a pretty bad picture. Here are my suckout hands;

Reasonable Day

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

At last I can move my ‘days without fuckups’ up a notch. Very clean session, wasn’t tempted into making any idiot moves (for a change). I think part of my good mental attitude today was down to this post on 2p2. The poster sounds like he’s making the same kind of mistakes I do. Although I’ve figured out what was wrong and what I should do about it, it’s nice to have a reminder – plus both his post and the replies were very eloquent, and expressed it all very clearly. I particularly liked excession’s response for his descriptions of typical micro villains, although the rest of the thread holds most of the solutions to the OP’s problem.

Anyway, keeping my solid (wood) head on, the session came out reasonable. No huge hands, apart from one where I called a shortstacker’s push with TP, which turned into a full house (just to kick him in the teeth a bit more!) :-) So I wasn’t playing a monster per se, but whatever…

Big Bad 2NL

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

So today I went crashing into 2NL with way too much overconfidence. I was rewarded by getting my ass handed back to me. Somehow I then grappled it back;

03mar09

Looking back at the hands that sent me tumbling down, one was a cooler while the other was a stupid overvaluation of top pair, duh!

BTW, these are to the same player :-( ;

Despite the troublesome crash, it was actually a lot of fun. Three tabling with ‘fast’ tables really kept my hands full, while having 2NL opponents meant that losing two buy-ins quickly didn’t leave me feeling pressured. I might be feeling different if I hadn’t recovered the loss though…

The Inevitable Happens

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

The weekend didn’t go too well, resulting in the loss of a buy-in ($10). I never seem to do well at weekends, for some reason it’s always much harder than weekday lunchtime games. I realised that a bunch of players were multitabling 10+ tables, which was crap mainly because they’re so slow, but also competent enough to cause problems – I’m not capable of exploiting their roboticness (robotism?) yet. I managed to find some tables with some looser players, but still failed to play well.

Then today I tried a different tactic, and deliberately chose three ‘Fast’ tables – playing three of these is still do-able without getting too frazzled, but it has the advantages that the grinders are probably not playing there.

However it still went bad – half was generally poor play on my part, but I also had a set crushed by a straight which blew away a whole buy-in.

I got to the point where I was $20 down, and thought that’s it – I’m now $18 down from my original deposit at Stars, and that’s enough. I closed all the tables and switched back to 2NL. I’ll stay there until I’ve recouped my $20, maybe plus a little more ($30?). Although of course I could follow Yegor’s example and try to get $100 from 2NL before moving up. Not sure if I have the patience.

02mar09

Not that it took too long to claw back $6.  Playing the turbo tables works pretty well – you can get through an extra 30% of hands it seems, which might take the edge off grinding 2nL…

When Aggression Fails

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

I went over yesterday’s hands carefully, and variance was definitely at play there. I didn’t see any hand that I wasn’t happy with, even though the villains got away with more of my money.

The difficult thing was that every table I played had a loose calling station and I couldn’t hit a hand. He’d enter most pots and not fold to flop and turn bets. I usually falter at letting go of a third barrel on the river, and open myself up to a bluff bet. I tried a few variations of checking flop, raising river, or check-raising if I was out of position, but neither made any difference. Ultimately when it’s like this I just start losing money.

I need to recognise the warning signs quickly and either move on or wait patiently for a hand (if I can be bothered). Recognising those signs is something I’m not good at yet (and I’m not sure if there’s a lazy PokerTracker stat for it) – what I really should do is watch the tables carefully when I’m not involved in a hand, and see if anyone is floating other players.

This morning went ok-ish. In a similar way to yesterday I struggled to get to grips with some players who’d float to the river and shove a big bet. It was hard to believe they were getting there so often with hands, but the only time I had chance to call one down he had TT and had hit his set :-(

It turned around slowly, and at the end it finished ok. Some bad luck played a part as a lot of my JJ+, AK hands didn’t get to see a flop as well unfortunately.
