Return To Normal?

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Another session where (on the whole) I was in control and beating everyone else. It’s kinda strange – it’s so different to all the sessions throughout October that it really makes you give credence to all those people who cry rigged! It’s not as if I even have to hit my hands, the opponents just seem to do what you want them to do. For instance there was one guy who would cbet every flop, check the turn and then fold to a bet. Every single time. After I’d taken a fair chunk of his stack, he told me I play dumb and left :-D

That might explain why the showdown chart looks like this though;

12Nov09showdown

That redline is somewhat excessive even by my standards. The blue line sucks though, but that’s mainly through getting stacked twice, unfortunately both times with a slightly deep stack. One was QQ on the button getting action from a blind that turned out to be AA (can’t help that), but the other was a train wreck of a hand where an OESD turning semi-bluff met a guy who couldn’t fold top pair (rightly so as it turned out).

So $24 up over two days, plus rakeback, has put my roll back over $200. That’s revitalised me a bit, and given me a second wind to push for my return to NL10 again.

Meanwhile on the Betraiser site I’ve managed one freeroll (above was my usual Full Tilt) – knocked out half way, but the standard of play was shocking. I’ll keep at it for a while, although the traffic on the site is truly dismal and I can’t see it lasting. Plus the interface is a bit buggy – I’d raise using the slider, press the bet button and somehow the bet amount resets itself so I ended up minbetting over and over again. Very annoying…

WSOP Spoilt at the Last Fence

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

I’ve been keeping up WSOP 2009, mainly through the ESPN broadcasts. Throughout I’ve been avoiding 2p2 and other sites in case I catch glimpse of a spoiler.

So it’s now the final table and I’m wondering when the last broadcast is coming out. I know it’s been played so got to be careful. I do a quick Google and the obvious happens. I now know who won and who came 2nd and 4th :-( ESPN broadcast later today I believe.

Oh well. Maybe one day it’ll be broadcast live somewhere…

Happy Birthday to Me

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Well, almost – it’s my birthday in a couple of days, but figured I’d blog now while sober (ish). Unfortunately it’s the big four-oh, so not so great really. My mid-life crisis plan is all ready to go, all I’ve left to sort out is the base jumping course…

My brother has noticed my obsession with poker, and as a b’day pressie has signed me up to a live MTT (£20+£3, no idea what the structure is). There’s no casinos remotely close to Cambridge (I think?), but this is some group that hires out a hall and is cashing in on the poker boom – I’ve known about it for a little while but was a bit chicken about trying out live poker with real people (I’ve played drunk games with mates, but there’s never more than a few quid at stake). Also £20 isn’t pocket money for me either (yet – all I have to do is drag myself out of NL5!). Now the pressure’s on not to do my usual tourney strategy (bet, bet, go home).

The tourney was to be Thursday, but out of the blue my parents and my sister all decided they were coming over to Cambridge to help me ‘celebrate’ my entry into over the hillness. So that’s got a raincheck until next week.

This poker place also has rake free SNGs & cash games going on as well which is pretty cool, although the cash games start at £0.50/£1 which is too steep for me (especially as this isn’t going to be full of drunk tourists like Vegas, but rather people who are into poker – probably a good recipe to lose a load of money). Some of the SNG’s start at £5, so that might be ok. I’ve no idea how they’re organising this – is it legal to set up a casino in a town hall?

Update: uh, a hand to show a) why you don’t play after lots of wine, and b) why microstakes is so stupid;

$0.02/$0.05 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
Hero (UTG) ($5.52)
UTG+1 ($1.16)
CO ($5.09)
BTN ($5.95)
SB ($5.00)
BB ($5.52)

Pre-flop: ($0.07, 6 players) Hero is UTG Q A
Hero raises to $0.15, UTG+1 raises to $0.25, CO calls $0.25, 3 folds, Hero calls $0.10 because it’s only 10c

Flop: 4 7 Q ($0.82, 3 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 bets $0.05, CO raises to $0.97, Hero figures the CO is FOS and calls $0.97 intending to raise the turn and hoping the MP doesn’t follow, forgetting to check his stack size, UTG+1 goes all-in $0.86

Turn: 4 ($3.67, 3 players)
Hero forgets about his turn play and checks, CO bets $3.67, Hero drunkenly goes all-in $4.30 but doesn’t give the CO too much credit (and surprisingly was actually right!), CO goes all-in $0.20

River: 7 ($11.84, 3 players)

Final Pot: $11.41
Hero shows: Q A
UTG+1 shows: A Q
CO shows: 8 7
Hero says “wtf?”

Hero wins $0.43 ( lost -$5.09 )
CO wins $10.65 ( won +$5.56 )
UTG+1 lost -$1.16

Update II: Just been playing around on the pokertableratings.com website – there’s some amazing stats on there. I come out fairly reasonable which is a bit surprising. One nice little piece (although not that useful) is you get a report card! Here’s mine;

reportcard

and even better for NL10! (not many hands tho – this is just for Full Tilt so doesn’t include the bashings I’ve taken at Pokerstars);

Private Tourney for Blogrollers

Friday, August 21st, 2009

S1ndr0me has got the go ahead for some private tournaments on PokerStars. We figured that if we invite all the people who read our blogs regularly into a private game, we’ll get some nice social poker going on.

Wednesday evening (GMT) seems like a good time, and the game will be a $5+0.50 regular tournament (ie 1500 starting chips and 15 minute rounds).

If you’re interested post a comment here or over on S1ndr0me’s site, and hopefully we’ll get something good going…

My First Re-Buy Tourney

Friday, April 24th, 2009

I entered an 8FPP satellite to the PS Sunday Turbo Takedown (where even 2000-4000 places get $90!), and this was my first tournament where there were re-buys and add-ons. I wasn’t too sure how they worked, but figured that it looked expensive. However this was for FPP, so couldn’t hurt.

It made the game kinda crazy – virtually no poker being played at all. Everyone would shove, call, and then rebuy if they lost. I joined in with what I thought were decent hands, and ended up rebuy-in 4 or 5 times.

Once we got to the end of the first hour the re-buy period was over. You could add-on an extra T5000 for another 8FPP, so of course just about everyone did.

After that it was no more re-buys. Except now the blinds were so high the shoving pretty much continued.

I went into the second period with slightly above average stack size. I played a couple of cautious hands which paid off a little, and then had these two hands;

  • First one
    No Limit Holdem Tournament
    9 players

    Stacks:
    UTG (12570)
    UTG+1 (73505)
    MP1 (148192)
    MP2 (10536)
    MP3 (21300)
    CO (20050)
    BTN (124528)
    SB (9112)
    Hero (BB) (98760)

    Blinds: 2000/4000 Ante 400

    Pre-flop: (9,600, 9 players) Hero is BB T A
    UTG goes all-in 12,170, 3 folds, MP3 goes all-in 20,900, 1 fold, BTN calls 20,900, SB goes all-in 6,712, Hero calls 16,900

    Flop: K A 5 (87,182, 5 players)
    Hero checks, BTN goes all-in 103,228, Hero goes all-in 77,460

    Turn: 7 (267,870, 5 players)

    River: K (267,870, 5 players)

    Final Pot: 242,102
    MP3 shows: A 9
    BTN shows: A 2
    SB shows: T Q
    Hero shows: T A
    UTG shows: 7 6

    BTN wins 25,768 ( lost -98,360 )
    Hero wins 242,102 ( won +143,742 )
    MP3 lost -20,900
    SB lost -8,712
    UTG lost -12,170

  • Second one
    No Limit Holdem Tournament
    8 players

    Stacks:
    UTG (72202)
    UTG+1 (63355)
    Hero (MP1) (259163)
    MP2 (253133)
    CO (67700)
    BTN (68548)
    SB (110540)
    BB (51180)

    Blinds: 5000/10000 Ante 1000

    Pre-flop: (23,000, 8 players) Hero is MP1 A 5
    2 folds, Hero calls 10,000, 1 fold, CO calls 10,000, 2 folds, BB goes all-in 50,180, Hero calls 40,180, CO goes all-in 66,700, Hero calls 16,520

    Flop: 7 J K (196,580, 3 players)

    Turn: A (196,580, 3 players)

    River: 8 (196,580, 3 players)

    Final Pot: 196,580
    Hero shows: A 5
    CO shows: K Q
    BB shows: 9 9

    Hero wins 196,580 ( won +129,880 )
    CO lost -66,700
    BB lost -50,180

And I was chip leader! From 660 entrants, we were down to about 70 players (top 5 went to the turbo takedown). I waited for a decent hand, and slowly everyone caught back up. We were down to 30 people and I was probably 10th or so, when I played this hand;

  • Final hand
    No Limit Holdem Tournament
    7 players

    Stacks:
    UTG (159268)
    UTG+1 (601953)
    MP (462032)
    CO (261208)
    BTN (57314)
    Hero (SB) (338643)
    BB (424760)

    Blinds: 10000/20000 Ante 2000

    Pre-flop: (44,000, 7 players) Hero is SB K 3
    2 folds, MP calls 20,000, 2 folds, Hero calls 10,000, BB checks

    Flop: 2 K 5 (74,000, 3 players)
    Hero bets 40,000, BB folds, MP raises to 80,000, Hero goes all-in 316,643, MP calls 236,643

    Turn: 6 (707,286, 2 players)

    River: J (707,286, 2 players)

    Final Pot: 707,286
    MP shows: A Q
    Hero shows: K 3

    MP wins 707,286 ( won +370,643 )
    Hero lost -336,643
    BB lost -20,000

Not a very good shove on my part really – my kicker was way too weak when the villain had shown he was willing to bet something. I didn’t expect him to call with a flush draw though! Typical…

Lol – that’s a pretty big post for a measley FPP satellite that I didn’t win :-) Oh well, next time it’ll have to be a winnings report!

Lucky Day

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

I started today as an MTT day, but it didn’t go very well. Seven tournaments without any of them getting to the money. It wasn’t even much fun either, as luck didn’t even go my way either. Perhaps out of those seven I was chip leader once, and it didn’t last.

So I switched to 2NL cash games just to have some fun. It wasn’t about winning rather than just playing without having to stake too much. As it turned out, I managed to cover all my losses on the tourneys;

05apr09

So clearly I’m a microstakes god who puts fear into any table he plays on! Well, not quite – here’s the table with the all-in expectations included;

05apr09ev

I was just lucky! I was four tabling, and some of my decisions were a bit rushed, and I do remember twice hitting a J on the river saving my bacon, but this is a pretty bad picture. Here are my suckout hands;

  • Suck out 1
    $0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem
    6 players

    Stacks:
    UTG ($2.74)

    BTN wins $0.29 ( lost -$4 )
    Hero wins $7.90 ( won +$3.90 )
    UTG lost -$0.28

Time to reset the ‘days without fuckups’ methinks…

Update: Just got a flush beat by a straight flush! Judging by the way the villain used his bet button I’m guessing he didn’t even know what he had…

  • Straight Flush

New PokerTracker

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

I’ve just downloaded the new PokerTracker beta – All-in performance charts have been added at last! Looks like I went through a lucky patch early on in my ‘career’, but it evened up recently. The recent unluckiness coincides with my tighter range I implemented in December, so I guess in reality that change in strategy was better than it appeared. Maybe I shouldn’t feel so bad that my cash games haven’t been as meteoric as I’d hoped…

I downloaded the beta mainly to add M to my hud (how lazy! It’s not like it’s a hard stat to work out on the fly), and while it’s not in PT by default, they describe how to add it here, but it required the latest beta.

The only other new things that are immediately obvious is a details page, giving an overall rundown all on one page, and having the HUD on the hand replayer. Not sure that the details page is that useful, but the replayer hud definitely is (although at the moment it’s hanging my computer, but then it is a beta…).

Update: Today was an MTT day – while trying to mess around with PokerTracker and failing to add M to the HUD (can’t be done apparently, despite that link) I was doing $0.25 tourneys while testing what would show (or not show) on the HUD. Once I found I couldn’t do it, I realised I was in the middle of two 45 player tournaments, and doing ok. I went on to place 1st in one of them, but bust out the other – massive prize of $3.49, but when the outlay was 25 cents that’s a nice bit of ROI :-)

I then figured I might as well stick to the MTTs since it was raining, and randomly opened $1 tournaments (18, 21 and 45s). By the end of the day I’d played 13 tournaments (not incl the 25 cent ones), and only got winning places in the 18s (one 1st and two 2nds). Not a massive number of wins, but still an overall profit of $5.14 – compared to cash games not fantastic for 5 hours of on and off pokering, but still +ve, and fun, so whatever.

I’m mainly pissed off at the very last tournament – I was chip leader all the way up to the HU stage, and even to the point that I had half the total chips on the bubble, and then on HU I was the chip leader by 20k to his 7k. Somehow I still managed to hand them all over giving him the win.

  • Penultimate hand;
    No Limit Holdem Tournament
    $1.00+$0.20
    2 players

    Stacks:
    BTN (7461)
    Hero (BB) (19539)

    Blinds: 200/400 Ante 25

    Pre-flop: (650, 2 players) Hero is BB T Q
    BTN raises to 1,200, Hero goes all-in 19,514, BTN goes all-in 6,236

    Flop: 6 T 7 (27,000, 2 players)

    Turn: J (27,000, 2 players)

    River: 5 (27,000, 2 players)

    Final Pot: 14,922
    Hero shows: T Q
    BTN shows: J T

    Hero wins 12,078 ( lost -7,436 )
    BTN wins 14,922 ( won +7,486 )

  • final hand;
    No Limit Holdem Tournament
    $1.00+$0.20
    2 players

    Stacks:
    Hero (BTN) (12078)
    BB (14922)

    Blinds: 200/400 Ante 25

    Pre-flop: (650, 2 players) Hero is BTN 5 5
    Hero raises to 1,200, BB goes all-in 14,897, Hero goes all-in 10,853

    Flop: Q T Q (27,000, 2 players)

    Turn: 3 (27,000, 2 players)

    River: A (27,000, 2 players)
    BB says “gg”

    Final Pot: 24,156
    Hero shows: 5 5
    BB shows: Q 9

    BB wins 27,000 ( won +12,103 )
    Hero lost -12,053

I need to figure out if they were good shoves/calls or not. TBH I prefer to play the HU stage without too many of these – I’d rather see a few flops and whittle down their chips over a coin flip shove…
