2009

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

The holiday season hasn’t been kind to me – in the second half of December I’ve thrown away $150. A lot of it was literally thrown away too. In a recent session I discovered that turning up the aggression slightly was working well – one move in particular where you’re out of position and it’s the kind of flop you’d cbet (dry board, single A or K on it), so you check and let your opponent do the cbet, and then you raise. Previously I’d call, and lead the turn, but obviously this has the downside of giving another card. So the flop check-raise was proving successful, and then I watched an awesome video on being a LAG. This unfortunately had the effect of me spewing $40 in a few hundred hands!

I think the differences between the session where the aggro worked and the one where I spewed were;

a) First session I’d already played for a while, and hadn’t shown myself to be anything out of the ordinary, while the second session I sat down and started firing away. Any idiot could put down as a aggrotard, and this is what happened (my check-raise was reraised every time just about).
b) I picked my spots more carefully the first time. I had got to know the players at the tables, and was able to pick and choose when to push harder. The second session I’d just started, and was basically trying to bully complete unknowns.
c) The second session I didn’t back down. I often continued against those players who pushed back at my 3bets. Consequently I ran into AA several times quite quickly. At one point I had to three barrel bluff, and the final river push finally made the guy fold, but how stupid is that! It worked once, but I don’t think it was a profitable thing to do…

So anyway, 2010 I will stop being an idiot. I’m still bankrolled for nl10, but only 10 buy-ins above the move down point – if I don’t even out I’ll be back at NL5 by February. However, you’ve got to experiment with your game I believe, so I don’t feel too bad (it’s not as if I’m going to turn pro any time soon).

Ok, onto the 2009 review;

Cash:

Tourney:

Well, it’s in the black! :-) (the $40 lost yesterday was 2010, so close thing to ruining the year’s results, lol).

The New Year, 2009
This time last year I’d dropped right down to NL2 – most of my game up to that point had been NL10 at Full Tilt (which was their lowest stakes at that time), and it hadn’t been going very well. So I moved to Pokerstars and dropped down, first to NL5 and then to NL2 as I continued to lose.

The Redeposit – April
In April I finally lost my entire account. I redeposited, and for some reason known only to myself at the time I went back to NL10. I then had a massive heater, gaining $350 in 20k hands. How that happened I’ve no idea! I should go back and look at those hands in detail, but as far as I can remember I was very very lucky – PokerTracker all-in performance says $120 over expected value at its peak.

The Cash Out – July
Inevitably the heater ran out, and I lost a bunch of $$$ pretty quickly. I think I’d upped the number of tables I was playing, plus overconfidence, and that led to much spewage. As it came crashing down a personal credit card problem suddenly arose and I had to withdraw my entire roll to pay for it. In hindsight this was actually a useful thing to happen to me. Firstly, it showed the kindness of friends as they immediately transferred to me a little bit of spare cash to keep playing. Secondly it made me decide to follow bankroll management properly. Up until that point I’d play NL10 if I had over $100 in my account (or over only $50 sometimes). Starting from $30 with the knowledge that I wouldn’t be able to redeposit in the next couple of months really made sure I did the right thing to avoid going busto again.

The Grind
So I returned to NL2 again. This time my game was much stronger and I rapidly built up enough to move to NL5. I carried on playing well and clipped $200 to move into NL10. I then lost a few buy-ins, and moved back down. Ground up, bust down. I did this 3 times (the three peaks at 41k, 51k and 65k hands). I suddenly realised I was doing the bankroll management slightly wrong – I had a single threshold of $200 where I moved either up or down. What I needed to do was set the move-up threshold higher than the move down one (ie $250 to move up, $200 to move down). This way I’d have a 5 buy-in margin to lose before having to move down.

The Donkament Win – November
I was within $20 of the $250 threshold, and it was taking ages (it says $60 on that graph, but I was also getting rakeback and bonuses which aren’t shown on the graph). It was November now, and I seemed to be on the most miserable downswing ever – no big spews, but not a single +ve session for ages and ages. Then one Sunday I was messing around playing some MTTs (as you can see from the graph above, I don’t tourney much), and suddenly went deep in a $2 180 man SNG. I walked away with $70 – I was finally in NL10 territory again.

The Final Fall
I seemed to be playing well and built my roll up to $450. It didn’t feel like a heater this time, and I felt confident that I was winning appropriate hands rather than sucking out. I decided to look closer at Rakeback and see which site was the best for me, and so I split my roll amongst 4 sites – Full Tilt, PokerStars, Ultimate Bet and Party Poker. The difference between the sites was amazing – at NL10 UB and PP was full of limpers who’d try to see every street, while FT and PS still had its usual compliment of 2p2 players. Despite this I’ve failed to profit from them, and even worse seemed to have spewed a ton of money.

Final Roundup
So what’s the roundup of the year? I have to be honest with myself and say I’m not very good at poker. Almost 100k hands, and still being buffeted around by variance and barely keeping above the rake. In fact since my chart shows only +$44 profit, it’s obvious my entire roll ($350 at end of 2009) is made entirely of rakeback and bonuses.

Is that a big problem? I guess not as I still enjoy playing. I still enjoy the challenge of learning a game where it’s clear that gaining knowledge and experience will lift you through the ranks. The frustration is coming from seeing the stakes I play as a goal in itself.

So my resolution for 2010 is to let go of the idea that I’m not a winning player if I can’t ascend rapidly up the stakes. I will play poker at the stakes my bankroll allows, and concentrate on being the best player I can for those stakes. I guess ascending graphs of $$$ won will show whether I’m succeeding, although for me it’ll be how I achieved it that’ll be more important…

Tournaments, Bankroll and Getting Twitchy

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

I did a brief audit of all my poker sites and it appears that my bankroll is now $450. That’s better than I expected and only $50 short of the NL25 minimum bankroll. Although if I want to be strict with myself the actual ‘move up to NL25′ point is 25 buy-ins (so I have an overlap), which is $625, and that seems a long long way off.

So I’ve started to get twitchy about my bankroll and being at NL10 and not really moving forward very quickly. That sounds kinda stupid since it was only June that I cashed out and started again from $30 – it’s not as if I’m heading in the wrong direction!

I think the thing is that it feels like I’ve been playing NL10 forever – I started out playing online poker a little bit more than two years now and where I was playing had NL10 minimum. I would play, lose, redeposit etc, but didn’t really know what I was doing. I found 2p2, starting raising preflop more, and started losing even more. Fortunately I moved to Pokerstars where I switched to NL5, although continued to spew horrendously (losing 40 buy-ins! Check my lifetime chart – that’s the slightly smoother crash at about 12k hands). I moved to NL2, fixed some major leaks (ie learnt to fold), and started rebuilding.

So I’m feeling confined by NL10 – I’ll tempt fate by saying I’m not here because I can’t play any better, but merely tethered by my bankroll being insufficient. And that’s where this whinging is moving into dangerous territory – I’m getting seriously itchy to start taking shots at NL25. I know I can do ok, but I also know that I’m a swingy player and it could be an utter disaster. I don’t play sufficient volume to iron that kind of thing out (which is also why I’m not moving up quickly enough – I’m too lazy to play enough hands!).

To divert myself from making a big mistake I decided to try the MTT route again last night. I played a bunch of 180 & 90 man SNG’s, thinking that a single good win would give me the wriggle room to ‘safely’ take a few NL25 shots.

Of course it didn’t go to plan – I only played a handful and as everyone knows you have to play a whole bunch to realise a ‘real’ return from these things. Out of the 8 I played I only cashed in one, and that was really stupid – I was 3rd in chips and we were down to 15 (from 90). I ended up calling a shove with TPGK to see the with villain with 2 pair. Turned out the villain was 2nd chip stack, and I was out. So stupid… I did the same thing on another 90 man – chip leader until about 20 people left, then threw it away on two badly played hands.

So, still feeling twitchy. I need to come to some kind of decision by Saturday – chances are that’ll be when I’ll have a go if it comes down to it. However if I do it while feeling that I’ve got to make a return I’ll play badly and probably make things worse. And then what happens if it goes well? Even a nice 3 buy-in win won’t push me into NL25 territory – it’ll only make me want to risk my BR more.

Bankroll management sucks.

Weekend’s Over

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Failed to cash in any of the weekend MTTs. Shouldn’t be too surprised as the fields for both were massive!

The 5k freeroll I went out about 9000th – playing a few hands which all missed on flop + failed to get a cbet fold tends to cripple your stack, followed by the inevitable shove as the blinds begin to bite. I saw S1ndr0me hold on a bit longer as he doubled up at some point, but later even he succumbed to a AJ vs A9 seeing a 9 on the flop. Bit of a waste of time really anyway – you have to beat thousands of others just to cash $10? What’s the point…

The Turbo Takedown is similar, but at least the cash is better. I had poor hands throughout, although at least this time I did build my stack a bit. However again the blinds were ferocious and eventually I failed to stay in. I was tantalizingly close to the money – from a field of twenty-two thousand people (!!!), only 6900 were left and 5oooth place paid $78. But beating 15,000 other idiots wasn’t enough and I was left empty handed. Yegor railed me throughout (nothing better to do, really?) and said that I needed to have built a stronger stack and taken more risks. He’s right, but I was feeling a bit risk averse unfortunately.

So, no new update to November’s results. Might play tonight, but whatever.

Plans for December? I’ve decided that all my plotting and calculations on what’s the best rakeback etc is all a bit pointless when done in a vacuum. What I really need to do is actually put my money where my mouth is and test it out.

So I’m going to split my bankroll equally between Pokerstars, Full Tilt and Ultimate Bet. I’ll switch my sessions equally between the three and see how it goes (I’ll try to match it so that by the end of the month I’ll have roughly the same number of hands at each site). At the end of the month(s) I’ll also factor in Rakeback and bonuses into my winnings and see which site comes out on top. I probably should add in Titan, but I don’t want to spread the BR that thin on any one site.

This hopefully will factor in things such as the ‘softness’ of the sites, table selection etc, and see if it’s true that if the players on Ultimate Bet are that much worse than Full Tilt, then it should show a better winrate from that site.

November Results

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

A day or two early, but I’ll update tomorrow night if I get a result. I wanted to post today partly because it’s been a great month and I just wanted to brag, but I’ve also hit the milestone of 100k hands. To have played 100k hands is pretty awesome, but the results aren’t so hot so I’ll talk about November’s results first :-)

Results from cash games has been ok, mainly because I’ve moved back to NL10;

Nov09

Those nasty sharp swings in the middle was my experiment at shortstacking NL50 to see how quickly I could clear a bonus. I was lucky to get away with only a mild loss of $14 and it was clearly not a good idea to push a bonus outside your bankroll. The 2nd half of that chart is NL10, and the monetary boost is clear to see. Still very swingy though – I half wish I had a more consistent style, but on the other hand rollercoasters are a lot more fun.

The big result was the $2 180man tourney win which boosted the bankroll by $70, giving a total  of $100 wins in tournament results.

Bonuses came to $20 (Full Tilt holiday bonus – hopefully I’ll clear at least another $20 before it expires), and about $18 in rakeback. So final total of $180 for November – a huge boost to the bankroll and long overdue. Tomorrow I’ve those MTTs as well, and just getting to the cash in the Turbo Takedown will be about $70, so as long as I can get a result I’ll be happy. I’m not holding my breath though, my tournament success is random at best.

So, on to the big lifetime result;

100kHands

Quite disapointing to have been playing poker for so long and not really getting the hang of nanostakes. I think I’m back on track again, and my NL10 progress should be similar to that early rise (perhaps not so steep – it was a heater on the whole). I’m confident that from now on it’s just a matter of time & grinding to get to NL25 & NL50.

Also the chart doesn’t really reflect my true bankroll – it doesn’t include tournament results, bonuses or Rakeback – plus it only goes back to July 2008, and I’ve played longer than that. In reality I’ve probably redeposited about 4 times ($250 or so), then that heater after which I cashed out $170, and then from $30 (donated by S1ndr0me and Yegor!) rebuilt my account to $330. I suspect that means I’m actually in the black when it comes to true lifetime poker results, but I’ve no proof…

All Set for MTT Weekend

Friday, November 27th, 2009

A little while ago I completed a survey for Pokerstars and got entered into a 5k freeroll. The freeroll is this Sunday so it’s been a bit of a wait.

PokerStars is also doing its Turbo Takedown tournament (had it stopped for a while, or have I just lost touch?), so I figured if I’m going to be playing a freeroll I ought to have a go at getting into the TT which is playing at roughly the same time.

I haven’t touched my PokerStars account for a little while so wasn’t sure how many FPPs were there (it’s 3000 FPPs to enter) – turns out I had 1350 left.

I entered two satellites, one for 300FPP and the other for 500FPPs. The first only got 18 players, so there was just one seat to the winner and 2400FPP to 2nd place. I had a crazy run of luck and several times ended up all-in as the underdog only to draw to a straight (so weird, I never hit straights in my cash games!) – I ended up HU but then went out on a AK (me) against 44.

I checked the cashier – the 2nd prize FPPs had put me within 50FPP of the buy-in for the TT! I quickly opened the lobby for the 2nd satellite so I could unregister and just as I did this it started! FML, I’ll just have to win the stupid thing…

This one had 27 entries so it was a bit better with 4 seats for the TT, and the 5th place got 2500 FPP. So all I needed was the 5th place really.

I quickly became chipleader, and held on to that until we were down to 10 players. The blinds started to erode my stack and the others had doubled up on each other so I began to have a tough time staying in the game, sinking down to 6 place. Patience and a few careful raises got me to the final 5, although it was a bit touch and go at some points. I figured I wasn’t bothered about carrying on since I had enough FPPs and so just shoved any ol’ hand (happend to be A3o), got called and went out.

So I got my 3000 FPP and registered for the Turbo Takedown. Remaining FPPs = 2450, profit of 1k points :-) If I’d carried on to get 4th or better in that last sat then the FPP profit would have been just 50 more, so it really wasn’t worth staying in (and besides that meant I didn’t take one of the seats from the other guys – and that kind of karma is *definitely* going to make all the difference on Sunday!)

All I’ve got to do now is get in the money on both those tourneys on Sunday…

Multitable Tournaments for a Change

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

Switching to MTTs for the weekend, for no reason other than why not.

So far played entered 4; 18, 27, 45 man SNGs and a scheduled MTT that had 362 players.

The big MTT I entered late, and worked my way up through half the field and then died away (it’s still going as I write this – need to put aside plenty of time for these).

The SNG’s I reached the final table on all of them, but only cashed in one :-( The cash was 3rd place which was also annoying since I was second in chips with 3rd place less than 2 blinds. I got AA and went to the flop against the chip leader – flop was Qxx, and opponent stacks off with KQ. I call to see a Q on the turn.

Next final table I went out with AJs against 99. My M was about 10 and there were still 2 more players to go out before the bubble – I limped in early position, BTN shoved and I called. I have absolutely no idea if that was a bad call or not – I’ve got the Kill Everyone book and I’ve got about an hour to kill before tennis (too short for an MTT) and I’ll try and figure out if I’m a fish or a shark (lol!).

The last final table I just needed to cash to break even. We were on the bubble and the chip counts were pretty much even between all seven of us. I then did this;

No Limit Holdem Tournament
7 Players

$1 + $0.10 Sit & Go

Stacks:
UTG (11,870)
UTG+1 (7,535)
Hero (6,185)
CO (7,635)
BTN (6,360)
SB (11,825)
BB (16,090)

Blinds: 300/600

Pre-Flop: (900, 7 players) Hero is MP 5clubs poker card 6clubs poker card
2 folds, Hero calls 600, 1 fold, BTN calls 600, SB calls 300, BB checks

Flop: 7clubs poker card 5hearts poker card Jclubs poker card (2,400, 4 players)
SB bets 1,800, 1 fold, Hero calls 1,800, BTN goes all-in 5,760, SB calls 3,960, Hero goes all-in 3,785

Turn: 4diamonds poker card (19,505, 3 players, 2 all-in)

River: 7hearts poker card (19,505, 3 players, 2 all-in)

Final Pot: 19,505
BTN shows two pair, Jacks and Sevens
Jhearts poker card Ahearts poker card
SB shows two pair, Jacks and Sevens
Khearts poker card Jdiamonds poker card
Hero shows two pair, Sevens and Fives
5clubs poker card 6clubs poker card

BTN wins 19,505 (net +13,145)

SB lost 6,360
BB lost 600
Hero lost 6,185

and that was that. On the flop I was actually favourite, but only just. If I’d folded to the BTN’s shove I’d be in poor shape, but calling against two other players who clearly like their hand? I dunno, tourney’s seem to be full of this coinflip crap, so what can you do…

Update: Started raining, so carried on playing.

Played 6 more – first four tournies fell apart, but then got to the final table on the last two. One was an 18 man SNG, the other 45 man. The 18 man I was chip leader for ages, but then the 2nd stack (who was unfortunately on my immediate left) hit several lucky breaks and rapidly shot ahead. It end up with him dominating while me and a 2nd player were running on gas – we flipped for it and I ended up with third.

The 45 man was more interesting – throughout the whole thing I rarely was in the upper half of the field, but then on the final table I struggled to pick up some cards and hovered with a 5k stack. However by the time the blinds had reached 1000, I was still there and it was down to the last 3! It had become shove or die time (actually well past that point really) – I pushed QTo in the blinds and the button called. He called with 54o – wtf?! Anyway, I doubled up. The chip leader then sucked out on the other guy and rivered a straight leaving us heads up. I was 12k, against his 55k, and didn’t last that long, finishing 2nd.

Those two wins put me in the black :-) 9 tournies, ROI 53% – final profit $6.72. A lot of work for a NL5 buy in! Still, it’s been a lot of fun, which was the point of today really…

Update II:

More multitables SNGs – a bunch of 45s, 90s, and a 180 man. I got into the final table in a couple of 45s, but not in the money, but I don’t care since I crushed the 180!!!

I became the chip leader early on and maintained it all the way to the final table (occasionally swapping down to 2nd or 3rd, but always bouncing back). On the final table we were down to 7 players and then this happened;

No Limit Holdem Tournament
7 Players

$2 + $0.25 Sit & Go

Stacks:
UTG (19,460)
UTG+1 (15,668)
Hero (59,813)
CO (45,609)
BTN (53,288)
SB (56,053)
BB (20,109)

Blinds: 500/1,000 Ante 125

Pre-Flop: (2,375, 7 players) Hero is MP Qhearts poker card Qclubs poker card
1 fold, UTG+1 calls 1,000, Hero raises to 4,000, 1 fold, BTN raises to 12,000, 2 folds, UTG+1 folds, Hero calls 8,000

Flop: 7clubs poker card 7spades poker card 7diamonds poker card (27,375, 2 players)
Hero goes all-in 47,688, BTN goes all-in 41,163

Turn: 8spades poker card (116,226, 2 players, 2 all-in)

River: 10spades poker card (116,226, 2 players, 2 all-in)

Final Pot: 116,226
Hero shows a full house, Sevens full of Queens
Qhearts poker card Qclubs poker card
BTN shows a full house, Sevens full of Kings
Khearts poker card Kdiamonds poker card

BTN wins 109,701 (net +56,413)

Hero collects 6,525 (net -53,288)
UTG+1 lost 1,125

I shoved since I was scared he had AK, and would draw out on me, and also he might possibly even call with a lower PP. Didn’t really think about the possibility of a higher pair!

That crippled me with 6 blinds left (less really with the antes). All I could do was fold or shove. I stole a few blinds, doubled up on a fellow shortie, got KK & doubled again, and was then back in contention more or less (still small stacked, but M was back over 10). I then got away with this hand;

No Limit Holdem Tournament
3 Players

$2 + $0.25 Sit & Go

Stacks:
Hero (42,050)
BTN (165,028)
BB (62,922)

Blinds: 600/1,200 Ante 150

Pre-Flop: (1,650, 3 players) Hero is CO 6hearts poker card Qclubs poker card
Hero raises to 2,400, BTN folds, BB calls 1,200

Flop: 4diamonds poker card 2spades poker card Qspades poker card (5,250, 2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets 4,800, BB raises to 14,400, Hero calls 9,600

Turn: 10hearts poker card (34,050, 2 players)
BB bets 13,200, Hero goes all-in 25,100, BB folds

Final Pot: 72,350

Hero wins 72,350 (net +30,300)

BB lost 30,150

He told me he folded because his kicker was weak – he said he had Q8o! I figured that if I wanted the main prize, I needed to push hard catch up with the big stack. This hand was the best chance I had, and if he had called then I’d still be happy with the 3rd place. As it was he backed down crippling himself in the process, and a little later I called his final push with JQ to his J9 and that was that. This meant I’d drawn even (almost) with the chip leader in probably what was a terrifying crushing of everyone at the table (chipleader had barely played a hand at the final table), and he instantly asked for a deal. I was more than happy since I was just stoked to have got there…

Best of all is that my prize ($73) has put my roll over $250, launching me into NL10 territory, at last! Maybe though I’m a tournament player really :-)
