Appearances Are Deceptive

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

So I went back online since I wasn’t going out tonight (saturday night – how sad!), and had one of those sessions which was just a struggle from start to end.

At the end technically I’m still ahead, but only if I include this morning’s session. Really I lost $1.70, which meant I burnt through this morning’s winnings and so the end of the day was a measly 93 cents.

One table had someone called cuteguy59 who played very loose and aggressively. He seemed to be insanely successful at it, and was bullying everyone off just about every pot. Pot after pot. He had a VP$IP of 84%, and a win rate of 47%!

And yet, clicking on his history in poker tracker showed he was on a loss. Once the session was over I looked at his chart, and it looked like;

Even though throughout the whole session he seemed to be the big bad guy who was taking all our (especially mine) money, really he was doing not much better than anyone else. I was even thinking I could really learn something from him, but maybe not. Well, maybe I could – his postflop play did seem pretty scary, and perhaps it was just his preflop range that’s too wide.

Running on Gas

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Realised that I’m nearly busto again – I guess redepositing the minimum was optimistic, but what’s wrong with that! Oh yeah, it runs out quickly :-)

Guess I’ll stick to Titan a bit longer, it’s good enough and there’s no point moving to Stars or wherever and wasting the sign-up bonus (it would be wasted because I’m not playing high enough stakes to make poker points quick enough – like on Titan it’ll be another 5 years before I get my bonus while playing on 2NL!)

I did think of depositing $100 or so and going back to 10NL, but maybe I’ll just be throwing more money away. 2NL is so pathetic though, all the forums going on about hand reading being so vital yet everyone at these limits are playing any two cards.

I need a goal I think – I’ll stick to 2NL purely from the saving money point of view. It’s still poker, I still should be learning something. The goal is that I want to have an entire week where the only big hands lost are legitimate coolers  (ie it was +ev when I got in), and no moronic bluff moves. It doesn’t matter if I come away losing overall, just that I made no idiot hero calls.

We’ll see. The week will have to start tomorrow though, since I’ve already messed up today’s session…

Gotta Tighten Up!

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

After posting my stats here, and then also on the StoxPoker forum, it seems that I’m playing too loose. My stats were about 27/18, and people reckoned I need to lower the VP$IP and increase the PFR (ie don’t limp).

On one hand I was surprised, since 27% sounded ok to me, but on the other hand I’m losing, and the response from everyone was pretty unanimous.

So I’ve decided to sort out my starting hands table, and then STICK TO IT!

I’ve previously been using hands recommended by Pokey on a 2p2 posting somewhere, but I think a fresh start needs a new table. So I’ve had Ryan Fees 6max guide hanging around a while, and it’s well respected, so I’m going with that.

So far I’ve reduced it down to;

UTG open 22+, ATs+, AJo+, 98s+, KQo+, KJs

MP open 22+, A9s+, ATo+, 98s+, KQo+, KJs, KJo, KTs
3bet QQ(TT+), AQs+(AJs), AKo(AQo), (KQs)

CO open 22+, A5s+, A9o+, 65s+, JTo+, T8s+, QTo+, Q9s, KTs
3bet QQ(TT+), AQs+(AJs), AKo(AQo), (KQs)

BTN open 22+, A2s+, A8o+, 54s+, 98o+, 64s+, J9o+, 96s+, Q9o+, T6s+, K8s+
3bet QQ(TT+), AQs+(AJs), AKo(AQo), (KQs)

where the hands in brackets are marginal and only played depending on the other players at the table.

I then powered up Titan poker to have a go, and instantly realised I hadn’t added hands for the blinds! :) Not the best of things to omit, since the SB is the biggest losing position for me. So since poker time is precious at lunch breaks, I carried on using the UTG hands for the blinds.

So, here’s the result of today at the new tightness;

Different type of graph to normal – it’s the green line that’s the equivalent to the other graphs. I posted it here because of the red line. Apparently it’s normal for it to be -ve rather than +ve. For my entire history mine has always been +ve, and I had wondered if it was indicative of a leak, but no-one’s ever pointed it out as such…

My stats for that session was 23/22, so I’ve definitely achieved my goals (for those 100 hands anyway, so not all that relevant). However I did mess up twice, once against a flush (when I was in BB as well, so shoulda watched out!) and one all-in preflop with AK (beaten by JJ).

So, it’s working out I guess, although it’s too early to say yet. It feels slightly restrictive, especially when I want to steal the blinds, but as with all bad habits it hurts to break them. I also need to sort out my blinds preflop play of course.

How to beat 2NL, the theory

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

I got an answer from 2p2, and while the answer was what I expected they posted it so eloquently and clearly that it convinced me my ideas about loosening up were clearly mistaken. There are some posters on that forum whose opinion I definitely respect highly, and it was nice to see two of them respond to such a beginner’s question.

So basically it boils down to tightening up, not bluffing, and value betting. The last few sessions I ran a VP$IP of about 32% and this is just too high. I think 22% is probably much nearer the mark, and I’m going to have to really discipline myself to get down to there.

The value betting and not bluffing goes back to my earlier post where I thought I’d cracked 10NL (oh the hubris!). Why does it slip away from me so easily? I think a large cause of this is perhaps impatience – when I’m playing for just an hour during lunch it’s too easy to strain at the leash and try to make some money quickly. Instead it’s clear that I’m losing money quickly…

Ok, 75 minutes to go until lunch break, so lets see then whether I’ve learnt anything at all!

Where I Belong

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Well, today proves I’m where I belong. A bunch of bad calls, passive caving to cbets, and almost no attempts to steal.

I’m not even sure I can see a single overriding leak that I can work on in that horrible little session – it was all a mishmash of general rubbish.

So where does that leave me? A loss of 3 buy-ins, just be glad it wasn’t 10NL….

Something has clicked

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Probably one of the hardest things for a beginner to do is look at their game and realise what their largest leak is. You’re trying to discipline yourself to a tight starting hand range, recognise danger signs, not be too passive/aggressive, understand your opponents ranges etc. The trouble is until you get all those ducks into a row you’re likely to still be on a losing slide.

Recently I think I’ve finally conquered my worst leak. My biggest problem was often pushing for a drawing hand to come through, and of course it frequently doesn’t, so often losing me a large pot. I realised that I had to reduce my aggression in these situations. I might be now a bit passive when someone 3bets me, but I’m definitely not losing like I was before.

One really useful video that helped me put this into action was Ed Miller’s ‘Poker Made Simple’ series on StoxPoker. His reasoning on Little hand, Little pot really worked for me.

Anyway, here’s today’s results;

Results for 1st November 2008

Results for 1st November 2008

and here’s the hand that won the most, even though it wasn’t played that great (especially after all I just said about chasing draws!)

Titan No-Limit Hold’em, $0.05/$0.10 (Titan HH Converter by Kreatief)

BTN ($10.04)
SB ($10.12) ____ (Hero)
BB ($18.31)
MP2 ($12.16)
MP3 ($9.85)
CO ($1.99)

Preflop: Hero is SB with Qc, Kd
MP2 raises to 0.3$, 1 folds, CO calls $0.30, 1 folds, Hero calls $0.25, 1 folds,

Flop: Ac, Kc, 3c ( $1 )
Hero bets $1.00, MP2 calls $1.00, 1 folds,

Turn: 9s ( $3 )
Hero bets $1.50, MP2 calls $1.50,

River: Kh ( $6 )
Hero bets $7.32, MP2 calls $7.32,

Final Pot: $19.64

Results:
MP2 has Ad, 7d
Hero has Qc, Kd
Outcome: Hero wins $19.64

Not very exciting, but it made me realise that I ought to be more inclined to shove on the river when I have the best hand. Normally I bet pot or a bit less wanting them to call, but the truth is that many people at microlimits will call with rubbish (as above), and possibly the profit from that will be larger than from the smaller calls I would get by betting small.
