Cruel Cards

Friday, July 10th, 2009

I’m in the middle of my morning session, so can’t type much. Having a bit of a heater though.

In particular were these two hands – they were back to back which makes the difference.

The first I messed up a bit, I was still just waking up and didn’t see the BB’s 3bet. All I saw was CO bet $1, and then noticing he was all in and thought that was dead money worth covering with the 88s – if I had seen the BB’s raise I would have folded – duh!

However the way the hand played out it felt like the BB had an overpair and had become a bit scared of the flush. So I jammed it on the river and he folded (fortunately – KKs maybe? Possibly JJ with the Q scaring him more)

$0.05/$0.1 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
UTG ($6.45)
UTG+1 ($10.00)
CO ($1.50)
BTN ($5.35)
Hero (SB) ($10.00)
BB ($9.80)

Pre-flop: ($0.15, 6 players) Hero is SB 8 8
2 folds, CO raises to $0.50, 1 fold, Hero calls $0.45, BB raises to $2.20, CO goes all-in $1, Hero calls $1.70

Flop: Q 2 3 ($5.90, 3 players)
Hero checks, BB bets $2, Hero calls $2

Turn: T ($9.90, 3 players)
Hero checks, BB checks

River: 7 ($9.90, 3 players)
Hero goes all-in $5.80, BB folds

Final Pot: $9.90
CO shows: A K
Hero shows: 8 8

Hero wins $15.25 ( won +$5.25 )
BB lost -$4.20
CO lost -$1.50

Of course with the CO all-in he saw my 88s and I bet he was livid to see he’s folded the better hand (I’m assuming – he didn’t blow up in the chat to his credit).

The next hand was this (same villain, just figure out where the btn has gone ldo);

Poker Strategy Search Engine

HandCrawler – a Poker Strategy Search Engine

I’ve mentioned this site before as a really useful resource, but it always looked like it could disappear at any time. However the owner has just had a new burst of energy and revamped bits & pieces of it, plus improved the search (so that’s why it’s got a bit of a keyword packed link above, just to give the site whatever boost I can).

The site is a search engine which specialises in hand histories that have been posted to forums. You enter in search parameters like ‘monochrome flop’ or ‘raise on the river’ + ‘top pair’ and it gives you all the posts in various forums where that happened. Very useful if you’re thinking about a general situation and want to know what someone else would do. I don’t know why 2p2 doesn’t license it, as it would make an awesome addition to their site…

Sunday Morning

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

After yesterday’s bashing I was a bit apprehensive about playing again, but once the chips started flowing the gambling monster soon settled in.

It went ok too, with only a few hiccups early on;

08feb09

The early loss was where I had Jx with a JAAA board – I got all my chips in and the villain had QQ. On the river I raised him, he reraised me, and I shoved. I wonder if his reraise made it obvious he had QQ, KK or Ax, although at these stakes he could be shoving with any pair, or even trying to bluff. He hadn’t 3bet me preflop, but then hardly anyone does at 2NL.

I’m a bit concerned by this hand – obviously at the end of the day I won it, and he was a jerk for not respecting my river reraise, but was I a jerk for not believing I was against a set or a better 2 pair?

His stats were 21/6 which says he knows what he’s doing but is passive – the river shove really does rep a big hand. Maybe he thought TPTK was a big hand…

Update: Went back for a few more hands, and bumped up the win by another dollar. Wasn’t an easy dollar though, and one particular hand that messed things up was this one;

$0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem

Final Pot: $4.22

CO wins $4.22 ( won +$1.27 )
Hero lost -$1.37

The villain had just sat down, so had no idea of what kind of player they were. I still have no idea what kind of hand they’re on, other than AA, AK maybe. I should have folded on the turn minraise though, 2nd pair just isn’t good enough to continue at that point.

What annoyed me more though was their comments in the chat box. Once I folded they went ‘ty’, followed by ‘easily done’. Put me on tilt for a while, although fortunately no marginal hands came up and I didn’t make an idiot of myself.

I stuck at the table, and after 50 hands their stats were 31/3 and they didn’t win anything else. Guess it shouldn’t have bothered me really – shame I didn’t get a hand to get my money back though…

What to Do Against Aggression?

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Difficult session today – several of the tables were quite aggressive. This makes life so difficult at 2NL, where you know most of the players are new to the game and love to bluff, while at the same time they won’t respect a raise and back down. All you can do is cave in and wait to pick your spots. It’s a bit of a mind game since you *just* know that they’re FOS and that money’s just there to be taken, yet without something of showdown value it’s a mistake to push back (since they will go to showdown).

Still, I’m probably not good enough yet to recognise the safe moments to call these bluffers down. I just looked back at one of those hands;

$0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem
5 players

Stacks:
UTG ($5.09)
CO ($8.34)
Hero (BTN) ($2.01)
SB ($0.96)
BB ($5.04)

Pre-flop: ($0.03, 5 players) Hero is BTN A K
UTG raises to $0.08, CO calls $0.08, Hero calls $0.08, 2 folds

Flop: T A J ($0.27, 3 players)
UTG checks, CO bets $0.22, Hero calls $0.22, UTG folds

Turn: 5 ($0.71, 2 players)
CO bets $1.12, Hero folds

Final Pot: $1.80

CO wins $1.80 ( won +$0.38 )
UTG lost -$0.08
Hero lost -$0.30

Quite clearly even though I had an overwhelming feeling he was bluffing, clearly this was not the time to call him down – I ended up wasting $0.22 when I should have folded on the flop. If my K had been a diamond then it would have been a tough decision on the turn.

Anyway,  despite the struggle against these guys (plus changing tables a couple of times), I finally pulled back into the black, which was assisted at the end by a couple of blinders. So overall I’m happy with today, even though it was hardgoing at the halfway spot;

Not Winning, Not Losing

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Mediocre session today. I felt confident that I wasn’t making too many bad decisions. One hand was a preflop all-in with JJ’s that perhaps is a bit dubious. As it was villain had AK and he managed to get a K on the flop. A more poorly played hand was this one;

$0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem

Hero checks, BTN bets $0.16, Hero calls $0.16

Turn: 5 ($0.56, 2 players)
Hero bets $0.28, BTN calls $0.28

River: A ($1.12, 2 players)
Hero bets $0.56, BTN calls $0.56

Final Pot: $2.13
Hero shows: 2 2
BTN shows: K K

BTN wins $2.13 ( won +$1.03 )
Hero lost -$1.10
CO lost -$0.02

Not entirely sure what my thought processes were there. Perhaps if I’d checked the turn he might have folded the river assuming the flush, but it’s pretty unlikely. I should have just folded the flop. I think I was slightly fed up that playing PP’s for sets really isn’t working for me. I hit one set today and it paid $0.11. Maybe I should at least check the flop, although so often slow playing these things turns into a disaster.

I think I’ll dig into PokerTracker and see if set mining is remotely paying off for me…

Here’s today’s graph;

27jan09

Also with regards to my frequency chart in the last post, response on the 2p2 forum was fairly light. People seemed to find it interesting, but ultimately couldn’t see anything useful that could be extracted from it.

I tried a few analysis tricks I knew from my former physicist days, and to be honest nothing came up for me either. In the end it was remarkably symmetrical, even symmetric between -ve and +ve wins. This is something I’ve wondered about – when I look at my (huge) losses, it pretty much equals the blinds. If I hadn’t had to put in the blind, I’d be breakeven!

Edit: ok, so I pulled out the stats on my PP. Not easy when I’m supposed to be working ;-)

Since before xmas (when I tightened up my range in general), I’ve had 173 PP. Odds of hitting a set on the flop is 7:1, so theoretically I should have hit 20 sets. I’ve only hit 10, so behind on the odds there.

Total wins from those sets: $2 :-(   It would have been $4, but there were two sets that lost (only two!), both AAA, and in both cases I slow played to let the villain draw a straight. They lost $2 between them.

So, what does that mean? Oh, I need another stat – money lost for seeing flop with the PP’s that didn’t hit a set. That came out to -$2.71 – leaving a grand profit of -$0.71 :-(

Perhaps that’s a bit simplistic – I think I need to take out the high pairs which I’d play anyway, and see how the low to middle PP’s did.

TBH, this is probably a self-defeating exercise – just because I’ve lost  money on set mining so far, doesn’t mean I will in the future. It seems generally accepted that set mining is a +EV thing to do. What I need to do is figure out how to extract maximum value when I hit, and minimum loss when I don’t…

Even Keel

I seem to be running even at the moment. I’m still trying to get my head around variance, and how to tell whether I’m playing well & unlucky, or bad but lucky (-ish). I’ve realised that looking back at your losing hands and seeing if you just sucked out isn’t enough – you have to also look at your winning hands and see if you lucked out on someone else. Maybe it’s not worth worrying about, and I should think about how I played hands, rather than whether they won or not.

22jan09

Edit: looking at that chart perhaps it’s too early to say ‘running even’ – the only thing that saved me was one big hand. Is that how it works?

I decided to explain how I show my hand histories, since I’m pleased as to how they’ve turned out…

Firstly I have to upload the hand to weaktight.com, since they’re the only decent hand converter for iPoker that I’ve found.

Then I export it as 2p2 format (so if I was using Pokerstars or Full Tilt I could skip the last step, and just use 2p2).
I then copy it into this page;
http://www.meteoricpoker.com/convert2p2.php (my own code)
and this converts the 2p2 tags like :heart: to urls like

<img src=”/heart.png”>

this means I use the four suit pics ( ) from my own site, and not someone elses.

The html for the hand history also has the tags;

<div class=”handhistory”> … </div>

around it – this means I can show the hand in a different style to the rest of my site.

And the style I’ve chosen is;

.handhistory
{
border-width: 4px;
border-style: double;
border-color: #aaa;
margin:20px;
padding:20px;
}

which is added to the stylesheet file of my blog (style.css). This makes the hand have a nice border and indents it slightly.

et voila;
