My PokerTracker All In Performance Can’t be Working

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

So far this month my NL5 game has done ok – up $67;

24Sep09_NL5

Except I haven’t made $67 since my attempts at NL10 went wrong and I’m actually only $0.40 up :-( I guess it’s still +ve.

However it’s gets a bit shocking when you look at my all-in performance for NL5;

24Sep09_NL5-allinperformance

Clearly my PokerTracker is just plain broken. No other reason for it.

Other news – tomorrow I complete the Full Tilt Take 2 promotion, so that’s a free $50, plus rakeback is currently $25. Fantastic – if only I’d had Rakeback a year ago, it would made so much difference…

Welcome Back to NL10, Here’s a Complimentary Kick in the Nuts

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

redarrowsRed Arrows are buzzing Cambridge at the moment – so awesome!

Warning - this post is a whinging bad beat story like on everyone else’s blog.

After faithfully sticking to NL5 I’ve made a reasonable gain on the BR – including the $50 Take 2 bonus I should get at the end of the month, and the rakeback looking like it’ll be 30something dollars it all looks very rosy and I decided to return to NL10 (again).

I was determined not to play scared money – stick to the usual gameplan and not worry if it all goes tits-up too much.

Of course it went tits up.

Here’s a graph of my last two weeks – nice grind, followed by today’s session;
20Sept09

The first few losses were unfortunate but ok – I had 82s (checked in the BB) which went to make a flush, but the board then went four to the flush and an 8 wasn’t enough (I still called on the river – another situation where I know I’m beat but can’t lay it down. I timed right down thinking ‘I’m beat, fold’ before clicking call at the last second), then with QQ on the button I was reraised by the BB – I shoved to be faced with AA.

So they weren’t so horrible, but all the rest were;

This hand takes some explanation – the BTN was truly terrible player. Not merely 66/8, but someone who would go to showdown happily with bottom pair. He’d also taken a beating four hands earlier shoving with a JJ to meet KK, fortunately reloading (short) and then proceeded to shove on every hand. When he minraised I realised I had an opportunity to get him all-in, hoping that the SB would drop out. He didn’t but when I saw their cards I was relieved that he didn’t have a high pair. Typically though he hits it on the river…

So after all that I’m a bit deflated. It was a bad run, and I should have finished ahead really. Three buy-ins isn’t huge, but it’s a lot for my first shot back at NL10. I’m going to have to return to NL5 and once I’ve won back $30 I’ll try again. Very tedious…

Happy Birthday to Me

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Well, almost – it’s my birthday in a couple of days, but figured I’d blog now while sober (ish). Unfortunately it’s the big four-oh, so not so great really. My mid-life crisis plan is all ready to go, all I’ve left to sort out is the base jumping course…

My brother has noticed my obsession with poker, and as a b’day pressie has signed me up to a live MTT (£20+£3, no idea what the structure is). There’s no casinos remotely close to Cambridge (I think?), but this is some group that hires out a hall and is cashing in on the poker boom – I’ve known about it for a little while but was a bit chicken about trying out live poker with real people (I’ve played drunk games with mates, but there’s never more than a few quid at stake). Also £20 isn’t pocket money for me either (yet – all I have to do is drag myself out of NL5!). Now the pressure’s on not to do my usual tourney strategy (bet, bet, go home).

The tourney was to be Thursday, but out of the blue my parents and my sister all decided they were coming over to Cambridge to help me ‘celebrate’ my entry into over the hillness. So that’s got a raincheck until next week.

This poker place also has rake free SNGs & cash games going on as well which is pretty cool, although the cash games start at £0.50/£1 which is too steep for me (especially as this isn’t going to be full of drunk tourists like Vegas, but rather people who are into poker – probably a good recipe to lose a load of money). Some of the SNG’s start at £5, so that might be ok. I’ve no idea how they’re organising this – is it legal to set up a casino in a town hall?

Update: uh, a hand to show a) why you don’t play after lots of wine, and b) why microstakes is so stupid;

$0.02/$0.05 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
Hero (UTG) ($5.52)
UTG+1 ($1.16)
CO ($5.09)
BTN ($5.95)
SB ($5.00)
BB ($5.52)

Pre-flop: ($0.07, 6 players) Hero is UTG Q A
Hero raises to $0.15, UTG+1 raises to $0.25, CO calls $0.25, 3 folds, Hero calls $0.10 because it’s only 10c

Flop: 4 7 Q ($0.82, 3 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 bets $0.05, CO raises to $0.97, Hero figures the CO is FOS and calls $0.97 intending to raise the turn and hoping the MP doesn’t follow, forgetting to check his stack size, UTG+1 goes all-in $0.86

Turn: 4 ($3.67, 3 players)
Hero forgets about his turn play and checks, CO bets $3.67, Hero drunkenly goes all-in $4.30 but doesn’t give the CO too much credit (and surprisingly was actually right!), CO goes all-in $0.20

River: 7 ($11.84, 3 players)

Final Pot: $11.41
Hero shows: Q A
UTG+1 shows: A Q
CO shows: 8 7
Hero says “wtf?”

Hero wins $0.43 ( lost -$5.09 )
CO wins $10.65 ( won +$5.56 )
UTG+1 lost -$1.16

Update II: Just been playing around on the pokertableratings.com website – there’s some amazing stats on there. I come out fairly reasonable which is a bit surprising. One nice little piece (although not that useful) is you get a report card! Here’s mine;

and even better for NL10! (not many hands tho – this is just for Full Tilt so doesn’t include the bashings I’ve taken at Pokerstars);

Not Much Happening

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Oops, not posted for a whole week!

Not much has happened to be honest though. I’ve been play a bit each day for the Full Tilt Take 2 promotion, all at NL5. I’ve decided to definitely build a ‘proper’ BR before moving back to NL10 – with my newly gained rakeback and the Take 2 monies it doesn’t look like it’s going to take that long.

This weekend has been so-so;

13Sept09

It’s felt pretty good though – no big blunders or drastic hero calls that shouldn’t have happened. However flop continuation bets seemed to have got an odd result – I boosted my cbet % to 60%, and it seemed to be working, or at least a lot of people were folding to those bets. Filtering the results in PokerTracker shows a $6 loss though. It seems to be from just 3 hands that went bad, so possibly I shouldn’t see it as a sign that my cbetting is flawed somehow (um, maybe).

Struggling Again

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

I’m running bad again, or maybe I should say playing bad again. I dunno, it’s not totally clear what I’m doing wrong – I’ve caught myself slipping back into one of my old leaks – PP preflop misses the flop, I’ll call a flop bet (he’s doing a standard cbet bluff right), & then calling a turn bet just in case the set comes through. Way too calling station :-( So knocking that on the head.

However, I’m still losing money far too quickly. I switched to Ultimate Bet just to try out my rakeback stuff, and I’m down $30 after 3 days. I initially messed up $20 while trying to sort out my PokerTracker HUD (what a struggle! got it in the end) and then pulled $10 back at NL2 – UB doesn’t have NL5 tables, so it’s NL2 or NL10 for me there.

Also the NL10 tables are 200bb max buy-in, and while a lot of players still buy-in at $5 I played a couple of tables full stacked – I discovered I wasn’t comfortable playing deep! :-) I think buying in at $20 just makes it scared money for me.

However, I then got KK – raised, was 3bet, I 4bet, he 5bet (still not all in!), so I shoved and he showed QQ – both hands remain unimproved and I win a pot of $36! Once we got to the 5bet I was a bit uncertain – doesn’t that mean AA/KK? I guess it means QQ too – if roles were reversed I’m not sure what I’d have done, maybe just called the 4bet. It did make me feel unhappy about playing deep, so I’m only going to buy in at 100bb now.

So why am I down $30 after climbing back to -$10 and then winning a double buy-in? I don’t know – I just can’t get to grips with the game there. Also I’m not hitting many cards. The cards should be no different of course, but once you start losing it’s easy to lay the blame there.

(I was going to post a hand here, but the 2p2 hand converter refuses to convert UB hands – you just get a message about the UB scandal!).

ok – got it converted by weaktight – here’s my bad beat of the day (actually it’s a bit of hero call, but let’s just say I had a read on the villain, *cough*);

$0.05/$0.10 No Limit Holdem
5 players

Stacks:
UTG ($9.90)
CO ($8.51)
BTN ($6.54)
SB ($9.48)
Hero (BB) ($10.00)

Pre-flop: ($0.15, 5 players) Hero is BB A K
1 fold, CO calls $0.10, BTN calls $0.10, SB calls $0.05, Hero raises to $0.50, CO calls $0.40, BTN calls $0.40, SB calls $0.40

Flop: 8 A 5 ($2, 4 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $2, CO calls $2, 1 fold, SB goes all-in $8.98, Hero goes all-in $9.50

Turn: 9 ($24.48, 3 players)

River: K ($24.48, 3 players)

Final Pot: $24.48
SB shows: 2 T
Hero shows: A K
CO shows: J A

SB wins $26.58 ( won +$17.10 )
BTN lost -$0.50
Hero lost -$12
CO lost -$2.50

ps. First $5 bonus achieved on the Full Tilt Take 2 Bonus – so easy! I can’t believe I’m going to get $50 just by playing 5 minutes of NL5 every day :-D

Update: ok, as you may have seen from my twitter I decided to do some Full Tilt Academy challenges to cheer myself up, and so I 6 tabled some NL5.

Of course, like most of my NL5 sessions lately, it went like this;

05Sep09_nl5

Which cheered me up :-)

How come I can beat NL5 very comfortably, but NL10 is still all over the place? The Academy challenge I was on was ’5 Common Hold’em Leaks’ which gave 5 tasks like raise TT+, AK  (& do this 5 times) etc – all very standard NLHE moves. In the session above I passed all but one, and that one was conspicuous by how much I failed to achieve it;

0 times out of 5: Open fold pre-flop 5 times with a suited A-X, where the “X” is 9 or lower.

Ahhh, I love sooooted cards too much :-)   TBH I do like opening A2s to A5s a fair bit. Maybe I should try and learn from the challenge and cut back (maybe, so hard to teach an old dog new tricks!)

Update II: ah, after another long session it’s become obvious that the opportunities to open fold a suited ace just don’t come along that often. In fact, they never come along! Soooo, not much of a leak if playing sooted aces is so bad…

Full Tilt Academy

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

I tried out Full Tilt Academy over the weekend. It was quite impressive, but fairly shallow. I think the best thing you can say about it is that it’s highly polished and has potential.

The strategy videos are only about 12 minutes long, which on one hand is nice and short so you don’t have to take your ADD pills. However on the other hand they take the route of explaining points repeatedly and very slowly, which means they don’t cover a great deal in those 12 minutes.

Also while the presentation is ok (super sharp video!), the poker pros themselves are clearly not totally at ease presenting stuff (fair enough, why should they be) – you can see how the piece is carefully rehearsed and they’re reading off an autocue (also why have they been made to sit on such uncomfortable chairs? Some of them are a bit weight challenged, and they look really precarious). You don’t get the impression at all that it’s these guys passing along their wisdom, but instead it’s the words of a script writer somewhere who’s read Harrington on Hold’em…

And then there’s the challenges. Quite cool that the academy is linked directly to your actual game play, but it seems to lend itself to playing bad poker. That mostly my own fault though – I just wanted to complete a couple of challenges to see how it all works, and so of course took the fastest route from A to B. That meant on a challenge of ‘Bet on the flop when you have a FD with both hole cards of one suit’ I played any two suited cards! One challenge is proving a real bitch, and that’s ‘open raise, bet every street and win at showdown’ – I opened NL2 tables (had to be FR too, yuk!) and tried minbetting my way through each street with made hands – even then they fold!

The way to really do the challenges is to take your time – take in the ideas, set the challenge as active and then try to play you’re A game. Eventually if you took in the ideas properly you’ll complete the challenge – treating it like a video game where you try to complete it as fast as possible is really really wrong…

So overall quite nice and I’m interested in seeing where it’s going to go. However, with all the poker professionals at their disposal the content is fairly shocking. But like I said, it has potential – the framework and polish is great, they just need to utilise their harem of professionals a bit more…

ps (I have to do this shameless plug!) if you haven’t got a Full Tilt account, don’t forget to get rakeback if you sign up. By happy coincidence you can get that here (http://rakeback.meteoricpoker.com/rakeback/71068/Full-Tilt-Poker.html)
