Heading Towards Busto – Again!

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

Losing again :-( I just don’t get it – all the careful learning and strat seems to be meaningless. Today’s opponents have shown me that it’s better to call with any two cards, stick with it like glue and it’ll all pay off on the river.

(ok, just realised he was hoping for the flush, but still…)

Followed by a bunch of flips going their way (standard I guess). And finally, when I’m on my knees realising that even if ATC is very much their range, it’s makes no difference;

In that last hand you might say I had very little FE, although with the board that strong who would be crazy enough to call with bottom pair no kicker? Most showdowns I did have a piece of the board (although not often on the flop), so I don’t think I looked too much like a blufftard. Who knows?

Bottom line is that my BR is dwindling again! Very close to busto now, and could have to redeposit again later this month if it continues. How on earth is this game beatable?

Head Game

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Very demoralised now. Went into a session with determination not to let this downward crash affect things, and of course I lost another load of games. I even caught myself getting a bit spewy in desperation, and forced myself into a conservative value bet only mode, but even then the limping clueless idiot picked up some nice hands and crushed me.

I will try again tomorrow, but not feeling very happy about it. My 10 buy-in strategy has me on the verge of $5s, which have always proven highly beatable so maybe that’s a good thing. Also on Sunday I fly off to chilly Torino in Italia for a week of training some guys about something computery (god knows how I’m going to fill a whole week – maybe they’ll let me off after a day or two). That’ll stop any poker shenanigans for a while since I’m not going to install poker on the work laptop, and definitely not going to play on a hotel wifi. I was considering taking a dvd of some poker vids, but being demoralised doesn’t help, plus staying in my hotel room watching poker instead of wandering around an ancient baroque city gawping at Italian women? It will be quite cold though…

Forgotten What it’s Like to Win

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

In the last 13 games I’ve had just one win :-(

Last time this happened I dropped right down to play the $2s, just to see if I could get my game back. I then spent ages not really going anywhere, although I suspect I saved myself a lot of money by doing that.

This is the month so far;

Can’t see myself climbing out of this hole by the end of the month. Am I really that bad at this game?

sigh, and my forum keeps getting spammed. I’m going to take it down I reckon…

And… Crash.

Admittedly those hands look a bit shakey with top pair shoves :-) Still, they called!

Feeling a bit rattled now, so might just hammer a load of $5s just to get some confidence back. BR is still twice what it was before the December heater, so no point throwing it away too quickly…

Rogged

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

OMG, what a morning! :-(

Bank holiday monday, nothing else to do and plenty of time, so figured I’d stick a bit of cash onto Pokerstars and play their HU knockout MTTs (where it’s $10 buy-in, then you win $5 for each player you knockout). I thought I’d keep signing up for them throughout the day while taking down a few regular husngs in the quiet spots.

Didn’t even get that far.

I registered for the first one and opened a regular husng while waiting. In the opening hands I tried a few cbets to see where I stood – he called all of them and we went to a cheap showdown where he had bottom pair each time.

I then tried a few delayed cbets and some check-raises. Every time I got called, and somehow he had a piece of the board. I figured I couldn’t put him down as a calling station as he had hit each time, even though he was calling really light.

I finally hit a flop, albeit OOP. I lead out each street with him calling me down. He paired his King on the river and took that pot.

I was starting to feel a bit incredulous, plus a bit short of chips. There were a ton of hands like this;

No Limit Holdem Tournament
PokerStars
2 Players

$10.00+$0.50

Stacks:
SB (2,320)
Hero (680)

Blinds: 10/20

Pre-Flop: (30, 2 players) Hero is BB 8clubs poker card 10clubs poker card
SB calls 10, Hero checks

Flop: 7spades poker card 7clubs poker card 2diamonds poker card (40, 2 players)
Hero checks, SB checks

Turn: 10hearts poker card (40, 2 players)
Hero bets 20, SB raises to 40, Hero calls 20

River: 5diamonds poker card (120, 2 players)
Hero checks, SB bets 60, Hero calls 60

Final Pot: 240
Hero shows
8clubs poker card 10clubs poker card
SB shows a full house, Sevens full of Tens
7diamonds poker card 10diamonds poker card

SB wins 240 (net +120)

Hero lost 120

At least he couldn’t get value out of monsters, but I was running out of ideas. I had won a pot only twice out of 80 or so hands (I 3bet pre and missed on the dryest board ever – had to lead out and he folded. The other hand was a flopped straight!).

Finally I was desperate with 500 chips – my KQ hit top pair on 7KTr, I raised and he shoved to show AQ. A Jack landed on the river and game over.

Amazing. But what can you do? The MTT started and I tried to shrug it off.

First game was a Russian maniac. Every pot had a stupid reraise somewhere (several 4bets at times). Finally it came down to my TT vs his AJ, and he hit. So that was that – next MTT in an hour.

So I went back to regular games while waiting. And again all the players were hitting any part of the board and calling down. Over and over again.

River: 2spades poker card (780, 2 players)

BB shows a flush, King high
Jspades poker card 3spades poker card
Hero shows
Kdiamonds poker card Jdiamonds poker card

BB wins 1,738 (net +869)

Hero lost 869

Tilted beyond comprehension, I withdrew the remaining cash from PS and gave up. It was only mid-day, ruined utterly :-(

I don’t believe poker is rigged at all, but it’s so easy to see why so many people do. At the microstakes if anyone with the smallest amount of money can play, then why not be giant calling stations – it’s all about the gamble! When their J2 hits a KQ2 board for the win, then whoohoo!

Maybe if I called every street a bit more I could win too…

Still Nada

Monday, December 13th, 2010

Still no internet. Looks like it’s going to be another week at least! :-(

Cable guy said something about having to relay bigger cable down the street because there are too many flats sharing our cable point, thanks to the slum landlord squashing in a trillion flats into the space of a normal house & garden. Of course my shed is the furthest away from the cable point…

Crap!

I’ve been made redundant.

but I just flopped a royal flush, so could be worse :-/
