Return to Form?

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

Ok, so my last post was whingy and negative. Really though I’m feeling way more positive about my game, albeit only at the $5 stakes :-)

So since I feel I can beat the $5s, I might as well play 4mans+ and start to rebuild the roll a bit. So far, so good;

They’re regular speed, which is why there’s not many of them. Plus quite a few of the games have taken over 40 minutes to play (that’s a total of 6 hours playing time there) which is really slow.

Anyway, 105% ROI is good enough I think ;-)

I might switch up to $10 4mans tomorrow – not rolled for it really, but I can’t be arsed to follow strict BRM when I’m practically busto anyway. Either I re-emerge anew, or I redeposit…

Watched a PrimordialAA vid the other day and tried to think what I’d do before he made his move. Almost everything matched, with a couple of exceptions where he shoved over a few things that I would have been nittier about (although one push was just crazy – he just took a big pot of someone and figured they’d be tilted enough to call with anything, so he shoved pre with Q7o. Fair enough having the read that they’d call with anything, but Q7o is a 50% flip against ATC, let alone a shove calling range, so didn’t quite get that one).

Anyway, that fired me up again to try regular husngs to see if I ought to be winning. My BR is pretty bad right now, so this is just $5s, and it went like this;

Game 1: First hand dealt KK – money goes in, villain has TT & my hand holds. Nice start!

Game 2: Straightforward, picked up several 200 chip pots, then on 20th hand hit trips on turn & finish him off.

Game 3: V passive opponent, hard to get value out hands. However on 106th hand get QQ and manage to get him all-in with his FD + gutshot. He hits the gutshot. First game lost.

Game 4: 38th hand my AA’s are cracked. Second game lost.

Game 5: Hand 6 my 88 go in against villain’s 99. Third game lost.

Game 6: 3rd hand, my TPTK (AJ) goes all the way against his TPWK and I’m back up to breakeven.

Game 7: AA cracked again. Another loss.

Game 8: Tried to push villain off a hand but he clings on with his 74o & hits his OSED which gets paid off since I hit my K on the river. Perhaps this was my fault.

Game 9: My 44′s go in against 88′s with expected results.

And then I run out of steam. The HEM chart has only 9 games on it, but it makes me feel that if I carry on it’ll just keep plummeting. Why is it all so different to the start of this year?

Super Turbo HUSNGs

Harder work than I imagined, plus it pushes the tilt buttons a bit. This is two hours from this morning (1 hour of actual play, the rest made up of making coffee and having to restart Full Tilt after several crashes – one of which I managed to get back into the game with 200 chips & come back to win :-) );

28 games, 14 won, 14 lost.

What have I learnt so far (from only 30 or so games ;-) )? Being so shortstacked 3bb open raises and 3betting should be obviously poor plays, yet I’m finding the players who do this very difficult to beat. Firstly you’re folding a lot to them so losing plenty of blinds & your 2bb openraises, secondly if you do call to see a flop it’s really difficult to continue without getting committed (maybe my 4bet shove range is too tight, not that these hands come along enough to make that much difference). Of course they’re in the same situation (which is why it’s so bad on their part), but if they keep the initiative it’s hard to play against. Ideally you want an idiot who bloats the pot like this and then plays fit or fold postflop, but finding out if they’re like this can be an expensive process (esp if they hit a hand, which can be any piece of the board – expect them to call down A2 when they hit the 2).

However fortunately at these stakes the majority of players are still calling on the button pre, with plenty of random shoves. A min-reraise pre is either an A or a PP, and I’m almost tempted to start folding to these since I seem to be getting into trouble despite the tiny call to make (for similar reasons to above). The random shoves are often really wide, although usually contain an A of course, but I’d seen stuff like T6o as well.

So no idea on a strategy yet, other than play the usual endgame stuff (not Nash btw, which is a ridiculous endgame approach). Never giving up hope is a good start, it’s remarkable how often you can come back from < 200 chips.

This was an exciting thread on 2p2. PrimordialAA bet Skates that he could play 2000 super turbo husngs at high stakes ($350, $500 and $1000) and come away with a ROI of over 3%.

The thread was initially filled with the bewilderment of the uninitiated who couldn’t understand why such a small % was so hard, and even after having the error of their ways pointed out, PrimordialAA went on a massive heater making 3% look like a ridiculous number. In the first 500 games he won $60,000. Then the true face of super turbos finally kicked in, and he remained break-even for the rest of the games, which actually gave a nail-bitingly close finish, finishing just over 3%.

I managed to rail him on the last handful of games, and it looked fun. So I started playing some myself (at $5 of course lol), and it was as fun as it looked.  It was enjoyable because it was over in minutes and you already knew it was going to be high variance.

These two things make it so much easier to see the bigger picture. When I’m doing my regular husngs I get pissed off at each game I lose (esp the suckouts obv), and a row of losses can stop me playing for the rest of the day. With these super turbos you just play game after game and you see your results after an hour’s play – much more like a regular cash session. So I guess playing $5 super turbos is like playing 2/5 cash with really really slow hands (lol, kinda).

Ok, fast forward to two weeks time and see me berating how crap super turbos are…

Update: also found a new blog to follow; Chipstar1. This was the guy who had that crazy million hands at NL2 showing a perfect climb. He’s now part of Pokerstars team online, representing the nanostakes players (despite having moved up to NL100). Seems a good guy & worth a read…
