Hot Hot Hot

Too hot!!! :(   Still going to play tennis though, although it’s going to be a bit desperate.

Newff (a husng player on my blogroll, even though he doesn’t post anywhere near enough!) wants to try his hand at the 5k HU main event at the Canadian Poker Open in August. He started a thread on 2p2 asking for backers and people were putting up 1% shares which is about $60. I figured I could just about spare that, and he’s probably got a better chance of cashing than I have of throwing that at my $10 husngs :-) . So I threw my share into the hat. Hopefully he’ll get enough for the ticket, although it’ll take quite a few people when everyone’s just up for 1% shares…

Stuff

Not much to say really. Last night I had my first session in ages where I won more husngs than I lost, with a nice streak of 5 games won at one point.  Prior to that I’ve not been losing, but I’ve not been beating the rake either – a very round 50% ITM unfortunately. I’m still playing the $10 games, but rolled for $20s and hopefully will move back up soon – sadly no longer rolled for the $30s, and it’s going to be a bit of a climb to get back there.

Cellsino have pissed me off a bit as they’ve not paid any rakeback yet. My account there has jumped up and down a fair bit, and currently sits back at the amount I initially deposited. The Rakeback however would boost that by about 30% so it’s annoying that they’re not paying up. I’ll just have to keep pestering them.

On the finding a new job I’ve still not started as one of my website development clients has a CV writing service (here’s a plug :-) http://www.citycv.co.uk), and she’s sorting out my CV in return for a few hours work on her site. Once I’ve got that back I’ll start firing it off – there seems to be a reasonable number of jobs in Cardiff so should be ok, although obv the economy isn’t making this the best time to jump ship. I still keep wondering whether I’m making a sensible move, especially because Cardiff seems such a random choice. If it’s all about the climbing then going to Sheffield makes more sense, but I’ve lived there and taking backward steps like that never works. Edinburgh was a possibility, but too far north and too expensive. My parents are up in North Wales, but it’d still be a 3 hour drive to get to them since it’s all hills and mountains that way. Living up there would be great for the outdoors, but there isn’t a decent city to live in at all. I learnt from that mistake when I moved from the centre of Sheffield to just outside in the peak district – all of a sudden I was completely stranded in the middle of nowhere & if I wanted to go to the pub in Shef I had to leave early because the buses were so crap. Much better to live in a city and have the countryside for the evenings and weekends if you want it (Sheffield was awesome for that really – great city and to get out into the hills was a quick 20 minute cycle!).

Poker on the Mind

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Yesterday I played tennis against this guy who’s clueless about where he should stand on the court. After every serve he’ll charge at the net (obv trying for a serve & volley), but he did it regardless of how the serve went. A simple lob return then puts it in the vast space he’s left behind him. Or a drop shot return to the other side of the court makes him continue his charge all the way round in front of his partner, again leaving half the court unprotected.

While all this was going on I couldn’t help thinking about everything in a poker context. He was an overaggressive player who was mashing his pot button regardless of pot texture or my range. He didn’t adapt no matter how many times I exploited the same move, and towards the end of the game he was double faulting his serves out of tilt.

Kinda stupid, and probably a sign I’m thinking about poker too much. There was a thread on 2p2 about this with the best story about a guy who went to the optician and read an eye chart saying King, Queen, whenever there was a K or Q.

I’m thinking about moving to Cardiff, and a big factor in that decision was that there are three casinos for playing poker there (well, 2 and a poker room). It wasn’t the biggest reason (mainly I want to get back into rock climbing, plus take up something new like kitesurfing or sailing – Cambridge is too flat and nowhere near the sea), but it was definitely a factor. However online poker is going badly for me at the moment, and I’m starting to think that being able to play live is going to be a really bad thing for me – supposedly live play is easier, but at the same time the BR required is way bigger than what I’m used to. No big deal playing a game which is $0.10/$0.25, but the minimum for live games seems to be £1/£1 or £1/£2 – even if I shortstack with a £20 buyin, that’s more or less twice what I’m used do (and I don’t really want to shortstack). Tourney’s seem to be £16+£4, which perhaps isn’t so bad if I just play once a week maybe. Perhaps I’ll get lucky early on and win a decent starting live BR.

Anyway, if anyone’s played poker in Cardiff, let me know what it’s like…

Update: After Funkeefeesh’s advice of getting some volume in I’ve been plugging away today at the $10 husngs (more games played today than the whole of last month!). Not gaining much though;

The last guy I played kept doing this;

No Limit Holdem Tournament
2 Players

$10.00+$0.50

Stacks:
Hero (1,420)
BB (1,580)

Blinds: 10/20

Pre-Flop: (30, 2 players) Hero is SB 5diamonds poker card 4spades poker card
Hero raises to 60, BB raises to 900, Hero folds

Final Pot: 960

BB wins 960 (net +60)

Hero lost 60

How does that ever make sense?
