Stealing Blinds

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I’ve probably blogged on this a load of times, but it’s always worth a brag. I was watching Pokey’s microstakes video which is a bit dated but still worth a view. He steals using minraises from the button which TBH isn’t that good at microstakes – limpers are quite likely to go that extra blind since it’s no biggy for them and they love to see the flop. At higher stakes I can imagine it’s fine as most people understand position enough to fold, and keeping the price of stealing that low pretty much guarantees it’s profitable.

Anyway, I decided to do a quick check on PokerTracker to see if my stealing is going ok – I’m a relentless blind stealer and even a constant 3bet defender won’t put me off (especially as all it takes is the odd decent hand against a manic 3betting blind to make it super profitable). Here are the results since April, filtered for stealing opportunities where I raised;

Since I rarely decide not to steal (if both blinds are 64 vpip types I might not, or against a manic 3bettor I admit I do tighten up a bit), it’s obvious that stealing pays – 39BB/100!! It’s almost worth just stealing and not playing any other hands (apart from that being insanely dull).

Position stats;

Position 1 is cutoff, and it’s always worth watching out for that ultratight player on your left who lets you steal through the button – extremely worth it in fact, you can see from the positional stats that it’s a higher BB/hand rate. Mainly this is because the button is just so obviously a stealing position that blinds give it a lot less credit than they should, while the CO is seen as a regular position and will respect your raise ;-) . I’m not a big fan of stealing from the small blind though – you’re generally only gaining one big blind while risking three and you’re OOP if called. Not a big enough deal to make a fuss about…

Bad Beat

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

I decided I had to 3bet bluff this guy preflop as he was clearly stealing every button (BB was supertight, so not worried about him. I possibly could have waited for a better hand, but he was starting to take the piss and needed to sent a message). He minraised back though, so I called rather than make it obvious I was bluffing (figured the $0.60 was worth it in order not to lose my image which had been quite strong up to that point), plus my hand was sooooted and you never know.

In hindsight, was a shove a bit excessive? He called it, and I was 70% favourite at that point, so it wasn’t bad really though, was it? Hands that would call are AA, KK (would’ve expected more than a minraise preflop, but obviously you can never tell), AQ, KQ (maybe), any pair that thought I was bluffing (huge river overbets seems a popular (and stupid) move at Party Poker), the hands I’m in danger of are sets although 3′s & 4′s are unlikely, as are QQ since I had one of the queens. The most likely outcome was a fold which would have been a good pot…

Update: Actually today’s poker turned out to be very enjoyable despite that bad beat. Last couple of days Party Poker has been ultra-aggro, which is good when you get a hand against them but pretty bad when you don’t. I was doing well at putting people on hands, although still made a few mistakes. For instance, in the following hand I put the guy on a pocket pair between 88 & TT, which meant I was a bit stuck about what to do on the river. I thought he’d probably wouldn’t fold to a river bet, so I just let it go. I really wish I’d typed 88? into the chat and then raised…

The guy who won that hand was a really solid player actually, although that made him actually easier to play against (or at least it made him less ‘random’). I was playing with him on two tables, and part of today’s enjoyment was that between the two of us we drained everyone else’s stacks. At the end of the day though he did better than me since I continued to float a little too often, bluff a few too many rivers etc. (kind of obvious from the awesome redline :-) ). Frustrating since I know without doing that (and without the bad beat), I’d have won a big pile today…

Proportions

Monday, December 28th, 2009

So after yesterdays post where re-evaluating my game seemed to have positive results, I kinda messed up today (although only from a results orientated perspective really).

I had one piece of fancy play where an aggrotard two places to my left 3bet my button raise several times. I decided to make a stand on the third time;

BB bets $1, Hero calls $1

Turn: 7clubs poker card ($4.25, 2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $3, BB folds

Final Pot: $7.25

Hero wins $7.05 (net +$1.95)

BB lost $2.10

I would have raised the turn regardless – the idea was to let him spew his own money in a stupid blind defence, but I was glad it turned up to give me a bit of showdown.

Later I also hit a set against him and was able to draw a bigger pot of $10 from him. This all felt good, and they were hands where I was able to exploit his aggression – it felt like real poker.

However later it went wrong as a few AK all-ins went against me. This was the bit that I’m not happy about though (obviously as I lost, but that’s not what I’m talking about). It seems that in no-limit you can play ‘real poker’ and swing decent pots your way by exploiting other player’s weaknesses, but these pots are swamped by the all-in flips. I can win a series of $3 to $6 pots by understanding my opponents, and then lose $20 in a quick succession of AK vs 77… I should be thinking about this long term I guess, all the clever pots add up and all the coin flips add up. Just because one swings wider than the other shouldn’t matter. Dunno though, feels like it does though.

One of the AK shoves was a nice pressie for someone though. Supposed to be a decent squeeze, but unfortunately there were a lot of big hands out there;

Pulling Back, Again

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

This seems to happen on a regular basis – I play well, then things seem to deteriorate, and finally I’m forced to take a good long look at how I’m playing.

The problem is that I know the basics, and when thinking straight can apply them well (including postflop). Once I start winning I start feeling bulletproof and play back at hands which I should just be folding. A few fancy plays go my way and I’m trying to win every pot going. Of course it doesn’t end well…

This month started with a few huge hands that went my way and gave me a 7 buy-in headstart. It took losing every penny of that plus a bit more before I realised I had to take a step back and see that I was being an idiot.

So today I folded when I was obviously beat, and didn’t float all those missed flops. It was a bit swingy, but came out up in the end;

Even nicer, this was on Ultimate Bet where my account had been seriously depleted. This put it back to a reasonable amount where I could multitable without worrying about the dreaded ‘you have insufficient funds’ popup when trying to reload. If my next post has a similar graph then it looks like I’m back on track.

As an aside, Yegor suggested playing limit hold’em. Such a weird game! While the blinds were $0.05/$0.10 the swings were tiny and similar to NL2 – no wonder bankroll management is much lower for limit compared to no limit. It was also a struggle against draws – getting AA preflop was always a minefield as you try to build a pot while watching each street conspire to give your opponent that straight with his 67o.

Compared to NLHE, limit hold’em is allegedly much lower in variance while the contribution from the player’s skill is less (pot odds become a bigger factor than bluffs). Possibly that might be a plus point at microstakes though. Also it may have less of the internet generation of players (ie more players coming from live games and less from 2p2), which might be useful too. I’m not sure how much effort I want to put into it though, but possibly more than PLO – I’m coming to hate variance…

December Results

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

A bit early to December results, but with xmas/new year etc I might as well do it now. Hopefully I can do a 2009 roundup post soon as well.

So this month started out well, but then died at the end;

And by site;
Site(hands): $$$ (rb = rakeback)
————————
FT(1216): $62.07+$8.08(rb)
PS(1050): -$12.95
UB(1172): -$22.97+$2.69(rb)
PP(882): -$27.94

I don’t really know what to make of things – there were plenty of bad beats I guess, but it’s hard to tell if that’s the real reason I lost 6 buy-ins in less than 300 hands. It devastated the money I put into PS, UB and PP – now I really need to reload them, although such a crushing has put me off playing there now. If it had happened at Full Tilt at least I would have had Rakeback to console me.

ok, here are all the worst losing hands in the 6 buy-in crash. Any advice welcome…

Call, right?

Crap, shortly after that hand I shoved AK only to be met with AA. Dropped $24 in 35 hands on Party Poker, decimating my wins this month – last 3 sessions I’ve lost 5 buy-ins. I’m still ahead, but only by $18. Merry fml Christmas…

Variance – A Kick In The Nuts!

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Ugh – just had the most miserable session at Party Poker. The last session I had a fantastic win of almost $30, this one destroyed that with a crushing -$25 :-(

No AA’s (only 70 hands, so odds against this anyway)
14 PP’s, only hitting 1 set but board went 4 to a flush (and I didn’t have a flush card).
KK twice – table folded winning a total of $0.25
JJ 3x – twice table folded, other time two-tone flop, I bet flop and turn, the calling station hits his flush on river.
The only flush I get is beat by a full house when turn and river pair (and I didn’t slowplay!).

So that was the shitty variance side of things. Where did I make it worse?

The calling station who hit his flush – I called his river pot sized bet.
I tried a multistreet bluff on a board that had double paired (ie it was 2QQ92) – villain had called my flop bet and when the 2 landed I thought I was in good shape to represent a full house (ie having a Q or 2). Villain couldn’t fold his aces though.
Tried a semibluff on a turn card – villain had two pair and obv called, I didn’t hit my flush.

Some days are just not meant to be winning days…
