Well, almost – it’s my birthday in a couple of days, but figured I’d blog now while sober (ish). Unfortunately it’s the big four-oh, so not so great really. My mid-life crisis plan is all ready to go, all I’ve left to sort out is the base jumping course…
My brother has noticed my obsession with poker, and as a b’day pressie has signed me up to a live MTT (£20+£3, no idea what the structure is). There’s no casinos remotely close to Cambridge (I think?), but this is some group that hires out a hall and is cashing in on the poker boom – I’ve known about it for a little while but was a bit chicken about trying out live poker with real people (I’ve played drunk games with mates, but there’s never more than a few quid at stake). Also £20 isn’t pocket money for me either (yet – all I have to do is drag myself out of NL5!). Now the pressure’s on not to do my usual tourney strategy (bet, bet, go home).
The tourney was to be Thursday, but out of the blue my parents and my sister all decided they were coming over to Cambridge to help me ‘celebrate’ my entry into over the hillness. So that’s got a raincheck until next week.
This poker place also has rake free SNGs & cash games going on as well which is pretty cool, although the cash games start at £0.50/£1 which is too steep for me (especially as this isn’t going to be full of drunk tourists like Vegas, but rather people who are into poker – probably a good recipe to lose a load of money). Some of the SNG’s start at £5, so that might be ok. I’ve no idea how they’re organising this – is it legal to set up a casino in a town hall?
Update: uh, a hand to show a) why you don’t play after lots of wine, and b) why microstakes is so stupid;
6 players
Stacks:
Hero (UTG) ($5.52)
UTG+1 ($1.16)
CO ($5.09)

Hero checks, UTG+1 bets $0.05, CO raises to $0.97, Hero figures the CO is FOS and calls $0.97 intending to raise the turn and hoping the MP doesn’t follow, forgetting to check his stack size, UTG+1 goes all-in $0.86
Turn: 4
($3.67, 3 players)
Hero forgets about his turn play and checks, CO bets $3.67, Hero drunkenly goes all-in $4.30 but doesn’t give the CO too much credit (and surprisingly was actually right!), CO goes all-in $0.20

UTG+1 lost -$1.16
Update II: Just been playing around on the pokertableratings.com website – there’s some amazing stats on there. I come out fairly reasonable which is a bit surprising. One nice little piece (although not that useful) is you get a report card! Here’s mine;
and even better for NL10! (not many hands tho – this is just for Full Tilt so doesn’t include the bashings I’ve taken at Pokerstars);

hey happy b-day, I’ve still got another yr to go. ha. Good to see the midlife crisis is in check. don’t forget to start looking for a motorbike or little sports car
how’d you get those reports, i cant find them on pokertableratings
lol, how’d you know I wanted a motorbike
On the results page there’s a series of blue tabs (if you didn’t see those then you missed the cool stuff). The end one is Grader which is where the report cards are.
nah cant find it. when i search for me or you it doesnt return either of us… just phill ivey et al.
Happy birthday!! BTW, PTR 5NL report card = FAIL!
Forget the motorbike, get a Vespa or Lambretta–unless it’s a Enfield or Norton.
don’t listen to the dog. get one of these bombay bad boyz
