All Quiet on the Poker Front

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

I’m afraid I haven’t played any poker since getting that NL10 kicking (well, almost – picked up $6 later that afternoon at NL5, but that’s it). I think making sure I played every day for the Take 2 promo, getting close to NL10 move up threshold again, and then getting beat back down has taken the wind out of my sails a bit. I’ll get going again soon I should think.

In the meantime I’ll babble randomly – Poker Shortcuts is working out really well for me. There have been a couple of misclicks where I was about to click elsewhere and a table suddenly pops up resulting in me clicking on the fold button. Nothing too drastic lost from that so far (a few PP’s preflop and a 2pair that was probably beat which maybe was a good thing), but going to have to be careful. I’m still a bit uncertain about the automatic betsizing, but warming to it – generally the size is pretty much what I want it. Sometimes it looks an odd amount though, like $0.67 or $0.53, but I’ve noticed some people commenting on the odd sizes and putting it down to bad play (why, I’ve no idea). If that’s the effect then it’s fine by me.

Despite my playing hiatus, I’ve come to the realisation that the only way to really win at this game is to play lots and lots of hands. I’ve been too concerned with the short term ups & downs, and need to put in the hours to see through the variance. I also need to do that to make the bankroll grow at a significant rate. Perhaps obvious really, but I was listening to a pokerroad podcast and the guy on it was asked for his most key advice – he said 3 things;

  • Follow proper bankroll management
  • Play lots of hands
  • Don’t ever withdraw

Sounds obvious and simple, except that it’s easier said than done. It all makes sense too – play lots of hands to reduce variance and build bankroll quicker, if you downswing move down in stakes to avoid destroying all that work, and don’t take any backward steps by withdrawing. Obviously you will want to withdraw at some point, but not if you want to keep moving up. If I hadn’t withdrew 3 months ago, I’d be almost at NL25 by now (um, unless it went downhill of course, which it probably would have). So, that’s my plan now.

ps congrats to Kevin on the microstakes msn chat group – he placed 1st in a $2 MTT for $200 the other day. No idea if he reads my blog, but nice win buddy…

Cake’s Doyles Room Added to Rakeback and Bonus Offers

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Doyle’s Room has been added to the list of offers. I’m afraid you can’t get rakeback if you already have a Cake network account though…

Move Up, Move Down, Move Up, Move Down…

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Again, moved up to NL10. Again, got a beating and so now I’ve got to reroll at NL5.

It was half a bad beat and half my stupidity today, so I guess I’m not too bitter about it. A KK was beat by a 22 on a 772 flop (that was the bad beat btw), and then I tried to represent a flush hitting against a guy who was clearly (so it seemed) value betting a top pair – turned out he was betting into his flush draw :-( Ill-advised move anyway though really.

So here’s my chart since the 1st June – I’ve put a red line where my move up/down between NL5 and NL10 is ($200 bankroll).

26Sept09moveupdown

Fairly depressing looking back at that, especially as it seemed that I’d really sorted out NL10 and was building to NL25. Looking back I don’t think I was beating it from skill, it was just a heater really – there was quite a few lucky suckouts to be honest.

Possibly having a single threshold for moving up isn’t a good idea – maybe I should set $250 at my move up, and $200 as my move down point. That way I’ll have a cushion of 5 buy-ins before having to move down again whereas now just one bad session sends me back to NL5 for a week…

My PokerTracker All In Performance Can’t be Working

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

So far this month my NL5 game has done ok – up $67;

24Sep09_NL5

Except I haven’t made $67 since my attempts at NL10 went wrong and I’m actually only $0.40 up :-( I guess it’s still +ve.

However it’s gets a bit shocking when you look at my all-in performance for NL5;

24Sep09_NL5-allinperformance

Clearly my PokerTracker is just plain broken. No other reason for it.

Other news – tomorrow I complete the Full Tilt Take 2 promotion, so that’s a free $50, plus rakeback is currently $25. Fantastic – if only I’d had Rakeback a year ago, it would made so much difference…

New Look

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

(press F5 if there’s no header images)

Try resizing the window – I’ve tried to make some kind of parallax effect in the header. I could make it move when you move the mouse over it I suppose which might make it more noticeable.

Probably doesn’t work with IE6.0, but then what does…

My work screen is quite wide & the title ends up a bit too far right. I’ll try and figure out a way to stop it floating off too far at lunch perhaps.

ps. If it looks a complete mess on your screen, send me a screenshot and let me know what browser, OS etc you’re using.

Bust to Boom

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

I got back onto the pokerz to regrind that loss at NL10. I’m frustrated but not that bothered – I’ve decided that I’m coming to terms with variance and beginning to not care that some sessions go well while others go south. I was watching 2 million in 2 months, and one of the guys said how it was really bad when you lost in poker, while winning was just a relief. I kind of feel what he’s saying, but at the same time today I had the mother of all heaters, and it felt GREAT!

Nothing could go wrong. I even had a royal flush, which admittedly I didn’t play too well as it was an automatic reflex to squeeze the CO out and I probably could have let him see a few more cards;

I also layed down a full house which at the time seemed like a smart move, but looking back at it I don’t think he had a ten. At the most it was a 4 too;

Final Pot: $2.43

UTG wins $2.36 ( won +$0.51 )

Hero lost -$0.51
UTG+1 lost -$0.05

So, end of the morning;

22Sep09

Nice! You’d think that’d put me almost back into NL10, but unfortunately I lost $12 last night, so still ~$20 short. The session last night was bewildering – I’d played about 300 hands, entering the pot on about 60 of them. Of those I was 3bet 20 times! It was a constant barrage of 3betting – every table was manic. I folded all but a couple and those two lost me $0.60 and $5, so it was pretty horrible.

Pokerunderdog said a wise thing and that it was just a coincidental run. He’s definitely right I think, and I should have just switched tables in order to start afresh rather than ditching the whole thing in for the night. So much mindset involved in poker!

Welcome Back to NL10, Here’s a Complimentary Kick in the Nuts

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

redarrowsRed Arrows are buzzing Cambridge at the moment – so awesome!

Warning - this post is a whinging bad beat story like on everyone else’s blog.

After faithfully sticking to NL5 I’ve made a reasonable gain on the BR – including the $50 Take 2 bonus I should get at the end of the month, and the rakeback looking like it’ll be 30something dollars it all looks very rosy and I decided to return to NL10 (again).

I was determined not to play scared money – stick to the usual gameplan and not worry if it all goes tits-up too much.

Of course it went tits up.

Here’s a graph of my last two weeks – nice grind, followed by today’s session;
20Sept09

The first few losses were unfortunate but ok – I had 82s (checked in the BB) which went to make a flush, but the board then went four to the flush and an 8 wasn’t enough (I still called on the river – another situation where I know I’m beat but can’t lay it down. I timed right down thinking ‘I’m beat, fold’ before clicking call at the last second), then with QQ on the button I was reraised by the BB – I shoved to be faced with AA.

So they weren’t so horrible, but all the rest were;

River: 9hearts poker card ($10.10, 2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets $3.80, Hero calls $3.80

Final Pot: $17.70

4hearts poker card 4diamonds poker card
Hero shows

SB wins $11.09 ( won +$5.20 )

Hero lost -$5.89

This hand takes some explanation – the BTN was truly terrible player. Not merely 66/8, but someone who would go to showdown happily with bottom pair. He’d also taken a beating four hands earlier shoving with a JJ to meet KK, fortunately reloading (short) and then proceeded to shove on every hand. When he minraised I realised I had an opportunity to get him all-in, hoping that the SB would drop out. He didn’t but when I saw their cards I was relieved that he didn’t have a high pair. Typically though he hits it on the river…

$0.05/$0.1 No Limit Holdem
5 Players

Stacks:
UTG ($10.05)
Hero (CO) ($12.43)
BTN ($5.32)
SB ($5.19)
BB ($10)

Pre-Flop: ($0.15, 5 players) Hero is CO Jhearts poker card Jclubs poker card
1 fold, Hero raises to $0.30, BTN raises to $0.50, SB calls $0.45, BB calls $0.40, Hero goes all-in $12.43, BTN goes all-in $4.82, SB goes all-in $4.69, BB folds

Flop: 5spades poker card 10hearts poker card 3hearts poker card ($23.44, 3 players, 3 all-in)

Turn: 2diamonds poker card ($23.44, 3 players, 3 all-in)

River: Qclubs poker card ($23.44, 3 players, 3 all-in)

Final Pot: $23.44
Hero shows

SB shows
Kdiamonds poker card Qhearts poker card

Hero wins $7.36 ( lost -$5.07 )
SB wins $15 ( won +$9.81 )

BB lost -$0.50
BTN lost -$5.32

Finally, one more villain hits on the river;

$0.05/$0.1 No Limit Holdem
5 Players

Stacks:
UTG ($10.25)
CO ($21.14)
BTN ($1.24)
SB ($10)
Hero (BB) ($11.26)

Pre-Flop: ($0.15, 5 players) Hero is BB Kclubs poker card Qclubs poker card
1 fold, CO calls $0.10, 1 fold, SB raises to $0.30, Hero calls $0.20, CO calls $0.20

Flop: 3diamonds poker card Kspades poker card 9diamonds poker card ($0.90, 3 players)
SB bets $0.60, Hero calls $0.60, CO folds

Turn: Jclubs poker card ($2.10, 2 players)
SB bets $1.20, Hero raises to $3.15, SB calls $1.95

River: 10spades poker card ($8.40, 2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $5, SB goes all-in $5.95, Hero calls $0.95

Final Pot: $20.30
SB shows
Adiamonds poker card Qdiamonds poker card

SB wins $18.95 ( won +$8.95 )

CO lost -$0.30
Hero lost -$10

So after all that I’m a bit deflated. It was a bad run, and I should have finished ahead really. Three buy-ins isn’t huge, but it’s a lot for my first shot back at NL10. I’m going to have to return to NL5 and once I’ve won back $30 I’ll try again. Very tedious…
