Not much blogging going on by anyone, me included! I was away at the weekend (quick trip to Paris, paid for *before* I became poor & stayed in a friend’s spare room, so don’t feel guilty about that), so I haven’t played much (or any) poker lately. Hopefully get to play some soon.

Otherwise, it’s just too damn hot…

Less Impressive

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Games in the evening seem harder? This is from two evenings worth;
24Jun09

Couldn’t really get a foodhold at any of the tables, and nothing really seemed straightforward. Oh well, guess the weekend was a heater (lol, like I didn’t know that already :-) )

Completed all my PS bonuses now though, although the last one was just a tenner. Still, all gratefully received.

Finally Some Profitz

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Perhaps should have done this from the beginning, it’s not like I’ve ever followed proper BR management before. After finally recouping my 5NL losses and getting back to the original $30, I thought why bother sticking $5 on a 2NL table when I can put it on a 10NL table (well the reason’s obvious, but I refused to listen myself). So, had a session back at 10NL;

21Jun09

Cautious at first, when you lose below your initial buy-in and it reloads automatically it’s quite easy not to know how much you’re down by (results orientated, but then playing outside your BR I can’t see how you can’t be). I also realised I joined some bad tables, so I moved a few times. Then it started paying off nicely.

One thing though – playing first thing in the morning pre-coffee can be -EV, as this hand shows;

$0.05/$0.1 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
UTG ($12.70)
UTG+1 ($13.50)
Hero (CO) ($8.80)
BTN ($2.65)
SB ($1.45)
BB ($6.35)

Pre-flop: ($0.15, 6 players) Hero is CO 7 A
2 folds, Hero raises to $0.30, BTN calls $0.30, 1 fold, BB calls $0.20

Flop: 5 6 3 ($0.95, 3 players)
BB checks, Hero checks, BTN checks

Turn: 4 ($0.95, 3 players)
BB bets $0.30, Hero calls $0.30, BTN calls $0.30

River: T ($1.85, 3 players)
BB checks, Hero checks, BTN bets $0.60, BB folds, Hero folds

Final Pot: $1.85

BTN wins $2.40 ( won +$1.20 )
BB lost -$0.60
Hero lost -$0.60

Hero suddenly realises what he just folded.

I’m expecting the collusion accusations from PS any day now…

Update: Doubled my BR – not many times you get to say that;
21Jun09b

That tiny little drop at the end is actually a whole $10 buy-in. My QQ hit its set on the flop, but unfortunately the villain’s KK also hit his set!
Beside the obvious cash profit I’m really pleased with this – no suckouts (by me), nice +ve redline – couldn’t be more textbook!

Sort of Beating 2NL

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

ok, I reckon I’m confident enough at 2NL now not to lose. Having said that the HUGE drop at the end of this session shows that there are elements of tilt still in my game;

20Jun09

In this case tilt was in the form of boredom, plus a little bit of contempt for the pennies we were playing with;

$0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem
4 players

Stacks:
CO ($2.22)
Hero (BTN) ($4.14)
SB ($4.90)
BB ($2.13)

Pre-flop: ($0.03, 4 players) Hero is BTN J J
CO calls $0.02, Hero raises to $0.08, SB raises to $0.26, BB calls $0.24, CO folds, Hero calls $0.18

Flop: 9 5 4 ($0.80, 3 players)
SB bets $0.80, BB calls $0.80, Hero calls $0.80

Turn: 5 ($3.20, 3 players)
SB goes all-in $3.84, BB folds, Hero goes all-in $3.08

River: 9 ($10.12, 2 players)

Final Pot: $9.36
Hero shows: J J
SB shows: K K

SB wins $9.67 ( won +$4.77 )
BB lost -$1.06
CO lost -$0.02
Hero lost -$4.14

The SB had 3bet defended my ‘steal’ several times in the last 40 hands or so, so when this hand was folded to me I was pretty much willing him to 3bet me (ok, not exactly folded to me, but the CO limping barely counts). However when the BB followed I knew that continuing was a bad idea – at 10NL I would have folded without too much grief. However, I’d been playing for about an hour, was doing well & feeling fairly bulletproof, and continued just for kicks. When the SB shoved and BB folded, it was unlikely the SB was bluffing but the possibility existed – whatever though, the mistake was preflop…

Sudden Burst of Good Stuff on 2Plus2

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

I was wondering if there was a good way of figuring out how many hands it took before you could rely on a villains stat, and so asked it on 2p2. I didn’t expect too much of a response really, and most of the replies were what I expected (ie lame), but a couple pointed out some other posts that were really good.

The first thing I found out was that the micro full ring section of the forum had been having ‘concept of the week’ posts, which look pretty good. Since I play 6max I’ve never really bothered looking there. The other week there had been one on getting the most out of PT/HEM, and this had some excellent posts by mpethybridge.

This then lead to a really nice archived post which mathematically showed how only 40 hands was needed to feel confident on VP$IP (or at one point, he shows how just 6 hands can be enough!). Both this one and mpethybridge’s posts also gave some good insights into 3bet% stats too (apparently mpethybridge has a ‘well’ post somewhere, so I’ll try and hunt that down).

So that was all pretty good – there’s some great stuff on that forum, but most of it’s really buried. The list of links they have in the stickies doesn’t do it justice really…

Update: Going through the Concept of the Week posts (index here) I came onto this gem. In particular the Sun Tzu quotes were really cool. I’d like to use one as a slogan on this blog, but that would be too corny…

Plod plod plod…

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

I’m within a few dollars of getting back to the $30 I started with (so impressive!), and I’m getting a bit bored of 2NL. I’m finding that I’m only playing my cards, and trying anything else isn’t really worth it since everyone calls. So no cbetting, no stealing, no fancy check raising. Well, almost none, but certainly 10NL was a lot more fun than this. Even worse, this tedium tends to make me want to gamble, and that’s not good. Fortunately today I was probably more lucky than unlucky (I definitely remember hitting my flush on the river after being heavily bet into on the flop & turn, very fortunate that one).

Anyway, here’s the chart;
17Jun09

Not sure what happened at the start – I was messing around trying to upgrade PT at the same time, so probably not paying enough attention…

Lost a Happy Meal in a Bad Beat

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

blah blah blah, more 2NL thrills & spills;

14Jun09

That big drop right at the end is due to this train wreck of a hand;

$0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem

Stacks:
Hero (UTG) ($4.62)
UTG+1 ($2.04)
CO ($0.44)
BTN ($2.00)
SB ($6.72)
BB ($3.27)

Pre-flop: ($0.03, 6 players) Hero is UTG 6 6
Hero raises to $0.06, UTG+1 calls $0.06, 1 fold, BTN calls $0.06, 1 fold, BB calls $0.04

Flop: 6 J 7 ($0.25, 4 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $0.16, 2 folds, BB calls $0.16

Turn: J ($0.57, 2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks

River: K ($0.57, 2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $0.50, BB goes all-in $3.05, Hero calls $2.55

Final Pot: $6.67
Hero shows: 6 6
BB shows: J J

BB wins $6.37 ( won +$3.10 )
Hero lost -$3.27
UTG+1 lost -$0.06
BTN lost -$0.06
