One Hand Can Ruin A Session

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

As I’ve been warned, I’ve got to be careful playing at 10NL when I’m totally bankrolled for it (well, bankrolled as in my account has $X – it’s not like I can’t ever redeposit *again* – I’m a nickels & dimes gambling degen!).

Today’s session bought that home to me. I had one hand that I misplayed, and it bit me badly.

$0.05/$0.1 No Limit Holdem
5 players

Stacks:
UTG ($12.05)
Hero (CO) ($15.00)
BTN ($9.70)
SB ($14.10)
BB ($7.60)

Pre-flop: ($0.15, 5 players) Hero is CO Q Q
1 fold, Hero raises to $0.30, 1 fold, SB raises to $1.50, 1 fold, Hero calls $1.20

Flop: J 8 J ($3.10, 2 players)
SB checks, Hero checks

Turn: 7 ($3.10, 2 players)
SB bets $1.30, Hero raises to $3.90, SB calls $2.60

River: 4 ($10.90, 2 players)
SB checks, Hero goes all-in $9.60, SB goes all-in $8.70

Final Pot: $28.30
SB shows: K K
Hero shows: Q Q

SB wins $26.95 ( won +$12.85 )
Hero wins $0.90 ( lost -$14.10 )

Why didn’t I just check it back on the river? There’s nothing that would call a river bet which I beat, and which would 3bet preflop. Mind you, I was getting a lot of weird 3betting (although not from this player) – lots of people were considering any Ax was good enough to 3bet with. Maybe A8 in this spot would call?

So, lost one and a half buy-ins with that hand, and then struggled to recoup the loss. Didn’t get many big hands – no boats, only 2 flushes of which only one paid off.

So it ended up like this;

28feb09

If I’d checked back that river, I’d be $13 in the black and feeling pretty pleased that I could make that out of such a dry session – pretty much all of the recouping was due to my non-showdown winnings. Instead I’m no better off (other than the education). Could be worse I guess…

More FPP’s

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Second day at risking my bankroll playing 10NL. After today’s session I have only 6 buy-ins for 10NL, which is a big bankroll no-no, so I am feeling a bit apprehensive. Also today I only made 8 FPP, which is less than yesterday for some reason, and still a long way off the 500 I need to get the bonus. Turns out the bonus expires in August, so that’s plenty of time so I don’t have to worry too much. Not as good as Full Tilt which gave out the bonus in $5 blocks though…

But here’s the good news;

27feb09

At this rate who cares about the bonus! :-D

Probably Not Sensible, But…

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

After thinking that playing Don SNG’s to build FPPs looked way too boring (need to get 500 points, and a $1 SNG = 1 fpp, so yawn!!!), I decided to play cash games to get the points.

Then I thought I might as well go back to 10NL. Dumb move possibly, but today went ok-ish, until the very last hand :-(

26feb09

I was just about to close the last window, and suddenly I was dealt QQ. I was 3bet preflop, and the flop came up with not a lot. I shoved after the villains 1/2 pot raise, thinking to myself ‘I just know this is going to be KK or AA’. Of course it was KK, and I went from $6 up to $4 down :-(

Still, I felt comfortable enough. Play was fairly straightforward, and not too stressful. Made about 16FPP in the session, so that’s 30 sessions to get my bonus. Hmmm, I wonder if I can actually do that before it expires? (I think it expires, doesn’t it?)

ps Hi to bankroll mark – just found your comment at the bottom of a pile of spam comments! Rescued and approved…

PokerStars, I’ve Been Missing Out

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

I found out that I opened a Pokerstars account more than a year ago – it was when I was first trying out online poker, and I knew nothing about sign-up bonuses, rakeback etc. I just signed up to see what their table layout looked like. I moved on and then started playing on pkr.com (good grief! one table only, laptop would nearly have a heart attack trying to run it – moved on to Full Tilt once I realised that you didn’t need all those graphics).

Since PS has more tournaments running I pulled all my money out of Titan and deposited on Stars (tournaments are where I go when I run bad – I don’t go there to win, but at least the loss is up front there).

I went to the 0.02/0.05 tables and couldn’t believe the difference. Plenty to choose from (expected that), and not one under 30% hands played – most were 40-60%! On Titan 4NL you struggle to get on to a table, and majority are < 30% hands played.

Once I was on a couple of tables it confirmed that I was back in beginner land – lots of limping and calling with rubbish, no 3betting. Completely and utterly different.

So of course the session went well, almost too easily;

21feb09

I say too easily, because over confidence always makes a fuckup (not the first big loss, that was my K high flush beat by A high). Somewhere on that chart is a little drop where I had 2 pair beat by a flush, and my river bet was the dumbest move ever, here’s the hand;

$0.02/$0.05 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
UTG ($5.71)
UTG+1 ($3.84)
CO ($5.00)
BTN ($1.32)
SB ($9.14)
Hero (BB) ($13.25)

Pre-flop: ($0.07, 6 players) Hero is BB Q K
3 folds, BTN calls $0.05, 1 fold, Hero checks

Flop: 4 2 Q ($0.12, 2 players)
Hero bets $0.10, BTN calls $0.10

Turn: 5 ($0.32, 2 players)
Hero bets $0.35, BTN calls $0.35

River: K ($1.02, 2 players)
Hero bets $1, BTN goes all-in $0.82

Final Pot: $2.66
Hero shows: Q K
BTN shows: 4 A

Hero wins $0.18 ( lost -$1.32 )
BTN wins $2.56 ( won +$1.24 )

The only hand that would call that bet on the river is a flush. All hands that aren’t a flush would fold.

If I’d checked though, he’d have bet. Would I fold? Possibly if he went all in, but he only had $1 left, so I’m sure he would have pushed.

Back On Track

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Ok, I’m good again. Moving up is supposed to be tough, but how embarassing that I lost my head going from 2NL to 4NL :oops:

Here’s today chart – solid headed play, back on track thankfully…

Fall Back, Regroup, Try Again

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

I’m glad I posted those hands yesterday – I knew what I was doing was bad, but needed a slap in the face to bring myself round.

Today I played properly – folding poor hands and playing good hands aggressively. That being said I had an AA hand crushed because I paused on the turn. He probably wouldn’t have folded QQ anyway;

$0.02/$0.04 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
UTG ($4.31)
UTG+1 ($4.14)
Hero (CO) ($5.01)
BTN ($6.58)
SB ($4.07)
BB ($1.36)

Pre-flop: ($0.06, 6 players) Hero is CO A A
1 fold, UTG+1 raises to $0.12, Hero raises to $0.36, 3 folds, UTG+1 calls $0.24

Flop: J 3 6 ($0.78, 2 players)
UTG+1 bets $0.68, Hero raises to $2, UTG+1 calls $1.32

Turn: 3 ($4.78, 2 players)
UTG+1 checks, Hero checks

River: Q ($4.78, 2 players)
UTG+1 bets $1.19, Hero calls $1.19

Final Pot: $6.81
UTG+1 shows: Q Q
Hero shows: A A

UTG+1 wins $6.81 ( won +$3.26 )
Hero lost -$3.55

So, finally came out in the black and feel happy with that;

19feb09

The other loss was also a bit cruel – I had hit my set on the flop (22′s I think), the board paired with aces and I built the pot up to a bit bet on the river (which was a J). The villain called and had AJ :-(
