I’m Soooo Results Orientated

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Finally it’s the weekend! Big lie-in and a chance to put in a decent amount of hands…

It started off ok, although the first winning hand itself was a bit dubious;

$0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
UTG ($2.00)
UTG+1 ($0.98)
Hero (CO) ($2.06)
BTN ($8.14)
SB ($2.57)
BB ($1.74)
[UTG posted $0.02]

Pre-flop: ($0.05, 6 players) Hero is CO K Q
UTG checks, 1 fold, Hero raises to $0.09, 2 folds, BB calls $0.07, UTG calls $0.07

Flop: Q A J ($0.28, 3 players)
BB checks, UTG bets $0.28, Hero calls $0.28, BB folds

Turn: 4 ($0.84, 2 players)
UTG bets $1.63, Hero calls $1.63

River: 8 ($4.10, 2 players)

Final Pot: $3.90
UTG shows: 3 Q
Hero shows: K Q

Hero wins $3.90 ( won +$1.90 )
BB lost -$0.09
UTG lost -$2

Villain was 55/22, but still calling the turn was a bit hopeful with just second pair and a straight draw. Although with the K I probably have about 9 outs, but even that doesn’t give me odds. And I probably should have 3bet that preflop…

Anyway, then it went hideously wrong;

$0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
UTG ($5.63)
UTG+1 ($1.38)
CO ($5.01)
BTN ($1.95)
SB ($0.40)
Hero (BB) ($2.06)

Pre-flop: ($0.03, 6 players) Hero is BB J J
UTG calls $0.02, 2 folds, BTN calls $0.02, 1 fold, Hero raises to $0.09, UTG calls $0.07, BTN folds

Flop: Q 8 9 ($0.23, 2 players)
Hero bets $0.16, UTG calls $0.16

Turn: 9 ($0.55, 2 players)
Hero checks, UTG checks

River: 4 ($0.55, 2 players)
Hero bets $0.36, UTG raises to $0.72, Hero calls $0.36

Final Pot: $1.88
Hero shows: J J
UTG shows: A Q

UTG wins $1.88 ( won +$0.91 )
BTN lost -$0.02
Hero lost -$0.97

I hate getting TT, JJ for exactly this reason – so easily dominated. I should have checked the river though (c/c, c/f? Call to a 1/2 pot bet probably).

$0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
UTG ($5.01)
UTG+1 ($1.93)
CO ($0.39)
Hero (BTN) ($2.08)
SB ($6.52)
BB ($1.41)

Pre-flop: ($0.03, 6 players) Hero is BTN K K
UTG calls $0.02, 1 fold, CO goes all-in $0.39, Hero calls $0.39, 2 folds, UTG calls $0.37

Flop: 3 2 2 ($1.20, 3 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets $1.69, UTG calls $1.69

Turn: 9 ($4.58, 3 players)

River: 4 ($4.58, 3 players)

Final Pot: $4.36
UTG shows: 8 A
CO shows: 6 A
Hero shows: K K

UTG wins $4.36 ( won +$2.28 )
CO lost -$0.39
Hero lost -$2.08

This was a bad beat, so I’m ok with it. I did consider raising after the CO to squeeze out the UTG, and clearly that would have saved me. Still he didn’t have the odds to call that flop bet, so I was +EV in Sklansky bucks at least…

$0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
UTG ($2.12)
UTG+1 ($0.87)
CO ($4.98)
BTN ($2.66)
SB ($5.63)
Hero (BB) ($2.56)

Pre-flop: ($0.03, 6 players) Hero is BB K 9
1 fold, UTG+1 calls $0.02, 1 fold, BTN calls $0.02, SB calls $0.01, Hero checks

Flop: T 3 A ($0.08, 4 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $0.04, UTG+1 calls $0.04, BTN calls $0.04, SB calls $0.04

Turn: Q ($0.24, 4 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $0.06, UTG+1 calls $0.06, BTN raises to $0.48, SB folds, Hero calls $0.42, UTG+1 folds

River: J ($1.26, 2 players)
Hero bets $0.63, BTN goes all-in $2.12, Hero goes all-in $1.39

Final Pot: $5.14
Hero shows: K 9
BTN shows: 6 J

BTN wins $5.14 ( won +$2.48 )
Hero lost -$2.56
UTG+1 lost -$0.12
SB lost -$0.06

And finally this was just plain dumb on my part. I should have folded on every street :-(

So after that it was a long push to get back to break even. I knew I had it in me, but all the time I was thinking why does it have to be this way round? Clearly the last hand shows why!

Anyway, got it all back by just getting my head together and waiting for the big hands to arrive, and after several hundred hands they did;

31jan09

So that’ll do for a bit. Any day ending in +ve $$$ is a good day – so results orientated :-D

I reckon I’ll go over to the play money tables and have a go at Omaha. Looks interesting…

Bad Beat = Good Play

Friday, January 30th, 2009

I think I enjoy learning about poker as much as playing it. One thing that tells me that I’m still appreciating the challenge is when I reread a strategy post and realise something new – like being told not to cbet into a wet flop and thinking ‘yeah, ok, won’t do that’, then months later reading that again and realising *why* you shouldn’t do that.

Here’s something I’ve just read, and it struck a chord. Last year it probably wouldn’t have;

“I’ve heard good players complain to me about how they get drawn out on all the time. But if they want to better their game and better their emotional state while playing, they should realize it’s a mirage.

If you are an excellent player, people are going to draw out on you a lot more than you’re going to draw out on them because they’re simply going to have the worst hand against you a lot more times than you have the worst hand against them. There’s no way you’re going to draw out on anybody if you don’t get all your money in there on the worst hand.”

That was Bobby Baldwin, after crashing out of the 1981 world championship due to two bad beats. It’s not just a mantra for dealing with bad beats, it’s actually a motivation for embracing them (as long as they’re real bad beats – it’s not an excuse for bad play).

Miserable, But Pulled it Back

Friday, January 30th, 2009

This was one of those days where every flop seemed to miss by one. I would have a K, flop would have an A, I would have an A, flop would be QJ etc.

I guess through times like that you just have to sit through it and hope things change. It gets so tempting to shake it up a bit and try a few bluffs, but that’s probably the dumb thing to do.

Nevertheless it did turn round a bit, and basically two hands made the difference – one was AA against someone desperate to hit his OESD, and the other a TT which made a set on the flop against a poor fool who waited for the flop before shoving his aces :-)

So, +ve at the end, but only just!

What to Do Against Aggression?

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Difficult session today – several of the tables were quite aggressive. This makes life so difficult at 2NL, where you know most of the players are new to the game and love to bluff, while at the same time they won’t respect a raise and back down. All you can do is cave in and wait to pick your spots. It’s a bit of a mind game since you *just* know that they’re FOS and that money’s just there to be taken, yet without something of showdown value it’s a mistake to push back (since they will go to showdown).

Still, I’m probably not good enough yet to recognise the safe moments to call these bluffers down. I just looked back at one of those hands;

$0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem
5 players

Stacks:
UTG ($5.09)
CO ($8.34)
Hero (BTN) ($2.01)
SB ($0.96)
BB ($5.04)

Pre-flop: ($0.03, 5 players) Hero is BTN A K
UTG raises to $0.08, CO calls $0.08, Hero calls $0.08, 2 folds

Flop: T A J ($0.27, 3 players)
UTG checks, CO bets $0.22, Hero calls $0.22, UTG folds

Turn: 5 ($0.71, 2 players)
CO bets $1.12, Hero folds

Final Pot: $1.80

CO wins $1.80 ( won +$0.38 )
UTG lost -$0.08
Hero lost -$0.30

Quite clearly even though I had an overwhelming feeling he was bluffing, clearly this was not the time to call him down – I ended up wasting $0.22 when I should have folded on the flop. If my K had been a diamond then it would have been a tough decision on the turn.

Anyway,  despite the struggle against these guys (plus changing tables a couple of times), I finally pulled back into the black, which was assisted at the end by a couple of blinders. So overall I’m happy with today, even though it was hardgoing at the halfway spot;

Redeposited – Sudden Heater

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

My account had drifted down to nothing (again!), so redeposited on Titan. I’ve no plans on switching to another site – the rake’s ok and I want to be good enough to benefit from sign-up bonuses before moving on.

And since I’ve just deposited, Titan was kind enough to deal me a heater of a session;

28jan09

I’m not going to take any credit for this one – great starting hands were being thrown at me, and all my straights and flushes hit. What more can you ask for.

Of course, since it’s all rigged, a heavy cooler should follow this quite quickly. Gets you all spewy with heater ecstasy and then kick your legs from under you, yeah we all know how it works…

Seriously though I’m really pleased – it’s nice to see green rows all over your PokerTracker rather than the usual red :-)

Not Winning, Not Losing

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Mediocre session today. I felt confident that I wasn’t making too many bad decisions. One hand was a preflop all-in with JJ’s that perhaps is a bit dubious. As it was villain had AK and he managed to get a K on the flop. A more poorly played hand was this one;

$0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
UTG ($2.98)
UTG+1 ($1.92)
CO ($5.04)
BTN ($5.44)
Hero (SB) ($3.89)
BB ($0.96)

Pre-flop: ($0.03, 6 players) Hero is SB 2 2
2 folds, CO calls $0.02, BTN raises to $0.10, Hero calls $0.09, 1 fold, CO folds

Flop: 5 8 9 ($0.24, 2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $0.16, Hero calls $0.16

Turn: 5 ($0.56, 2 players)
Hero bets $0.28, BTN calls $0.28

River: A ($1.12, 2 players)
Hero bets $0.56, BTN calls $0.56

Final Pot: $2.13
Hero shows: 2 2
BTN shows: K K

BTN wins $2.13 ( won +$1.03 )
Hero lost -$1.10
CO lost -$0.02

Not entirely sure what my thought processes were there. Perhaps if I’d checked the turn he might have folded the river assuming the flush, but it’s pretty unlikely. I should have just folded the flop. I think I was slightly fed up that playing PP’s for sets really isn’t working for me. I hit one set today and it paid $0.11. Maybe I should at least check the flop, although so often slow playing these things turns into a disaster.

$0.01/$0.02 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
UTG ($6.09)
UTG+1 ($2.28)
CO ($0.56)
BTN ($1.87)
Hero (SB) ($1.98)
BB ($0.81)

Pre-flop: ($0.03, 6 players) Hero is SB 8 8
UTG calls $0.02, 2 folds, BTN calls $0.02, Hero raises to $0.08, 1 fold, UTG folds, BTN calls $0.06

Flop: 5 8 Q ($0.21, 2 players)
Hero bets $0.18, BTN folds

Final Pot: $0.37

Hero wins $0.37 ( won +$0.11 )
BTN lost -$0.08
UTG lost -$0.02

I think I’ll dig into PokerTracker and see if set mining is remotely paying off for me…

Here’s today’s graph;

27jan09

Also with regards to my frequency chart in the last post, response on the 2p2 forum was fairly light. People seemed to find it interesting, but ultimately couldn’t see anything useful that could be extracted from it.

I tried a few analysis tricks I knew from my former physicist days, and to be honest nothing came up for me either. In the end it was remarkably symmetrical, even symmetric between -ve and +ve wins. This is something I’ve wondered about – when I look at my (huge) losses, it pretty much equals the blinds. If I hadn’t had to put in the blind, I’d be breakeven!

Edit: ok, so I pulled out the stats on my PP. Not easy when I’m supposed to be working ;-)

Since before xmas (when I tightened up my range in general), I’ve had 173 PP. Odds of hitting a set on the flop is 7:1, so theoretically I should have hit 20 sets. I’ve only hit 10, so behind on the odds there.

Total wins from those sets: $2 :-(   It would have been $4, but there were two sets that lost (only two!), both AAA, and in both cases I slow played to let the villain draw a straight. They lost $2 between them.

So, what does that mean? Oh, I need another stat – money lost for seeing flop with the PP’s that didn’t hit a set. That came out to -$2.71 – leaving a grand profit of -$0.71 :-(

Perhaps that’s a bit simplistic – I think I need to take out the high pairs which I’d play anyway, and see how the low to middle PP’s did.

TBH, this is probably a self-defeating exercise – just because I’ve lost  money on set mining so far, doesn’t mean I will in the future. It seems generally accepted that set mining is a +EV thing to do. What I need to do is figure out how to extract maximum value when I hit, and minimum loss when I don’t…

Statistical Analysis

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

I’ve spent the day mainly watching StoxPoker videos, and frustratingly didn’t have any eureka moments. Unfortunately it even appeared that I’ve been underestimating the strength of hands postflop – Ed Miller was happily bashing microstakes opponents with top pair medium kicker (and even middle pair), even shoving on the river with some of these hands. Obviously the difference comes in that he can easily recognise the dangerous boards, and has the hand reading skills to do this.

It got me wondering whether I was getting enough value out of my hands. Was I being too nitty? Am I really going to showdown too light? I seem to win small and lose big, but this could just be psychological – ie I remember the big losses more than the small ones.

So I dug into my PokerTracker and thought, how about some statistical analysis? I figured if I worked out the deviation of my wins/losses, it should show some skew somewhere that might help.

Here’s what I ended up with – it’s a frequency plot of win/losses in BB (big bets – 2xbb);

histogram

Uh, ok. What now? It was far more symmetrical than I was expecting. That’s a log scale on the y-axis by the way, otherwise the spike on the zero out-weighs everything.

I guess I don’t know what I would see if I was a winning player. Without anything to reference it to there’s not much it can tell me. I’m going to have to post something on 2p2 to see if there’s anyone else who’s thought about this…

Edit: I’ve just noticed on the win side there’s a little peak at the 50BB point, which corresponds to people who I stacked where they had full buy-in (100bb). Perhaps the drop between 25BB and 50BB is a sign of something – maybe I’m settling for a win of about 23BB too much. That’s too big to correspond to a CBet on the flop? Maybe it’s a shortstacker all-in?
